    SMX is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to help design, build, and operate secure software release pipelines and backend services supporting a large-scale modernization effort for a Federal customer. As part of a DevSecOps-enabled environment, you will work closely with developers, system engineers, and operations teams to deliver scalable, compliant, and resilient software systems. This role is ideal for someone passionate about backend development, automation, and secure software practices within cloud-native environments.

    Essential Duties:

    + Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs to support secure CI/CD pipelines and DevSecOps workflows.

    + Collaborate with DevOps and infrastructure teams to automate deployments, monitoring, and compliance checks.

    + Contribute to the onboarding and support of software development teams into the secure cloud and pipeline environments.

    + Write secure, efficient, and scalable code, following established development best practices.

    + Analyze user requirements, decompose stories, and contribute to technical design discussions.

    + Troubleshoot issues across the stack and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

    + Participate in sprint planning, code reviews, and the delivery of quality assurance activities.

    + Maintain and enhance documentation for code, pipelines, and system interfaces.

    Required Skills & Experience:

    + BA/BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.

    + 8+ years of professional experience in software engineering roles, including backend development.

    + Strong hands-on development experience with Python in a Linux environment.

    + Experience building RESTful APIs and working with service-oriented or microservice architectures.

    + Familiarity with version control, automated testing, and secure coding practices.

    + Experience working in Agile environments.

    + Active or interim Secret clearance (or the ability to obtain one); U.S. Citizenship is required.

    Desired Skills & Experience

    + Experience with containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and deploying to cloud-native platforms.

    + Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and tools (e.g., GitLab CI, Jenkins).

    + Exposure to database technologies such as PostgreSQL, NoSQL, or similar.

    + Experience with messaging frameworks (e.g., Kafka, ZeroMQ).

    + Knowledge of RMF, STIGs, or working in secure, compliance-driven environments.

    + Familiarity with Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence) and automated testing frameworks.

    + Security+ or other relevant certifications are a plus.

    The proposed salary for this position is:

    $123,800—$206,300 USD
