The Veterinary Health Technologist will provide veterinary healthcare services to laboratory animal populations under the direct supervision of an Animal Resources Veterinarian or Senior Animal Health Technologist. This role supports the health and welfare of various species used in biomedical research through clinical care, preventive medicine, and technical assistance.
Located in Ridgefield, CT
1 year contract with extension
**Pay:** $25-30/hour
Key Responsibilities:
+ Assist in implementing preventive medicine programs, including physical examinations, vaccinations, disease control, health surveillance, and dental prophylaxis.
+ Support the environmental enrichment program for multiple laboratory animal species.
+ Aid in the maintenance and operation of an aseptic surgical suite. Provide pre-, peri-, and post-operative care, including anesthesia induction and monitoring, pain management, fluid and antibiotic administration, and wound care.
+ Participate in large and small animal health rounds, reporting abnormalities to the attending veterinarian.
+ Collect and submit diagnostic specimens for laboratory analysis.
+ Administer basic veterinary treatments under veterinary supervision.
+ Comply with all applicable animal welfare regulations and institutional policies. Maintain accurate medical and procedural records in accordance with SOPs.
+ Participate in training workshops and in-service education to continuously improve technical skills.
+ Availability to work scheduled weekends, holidays, and occasional off-hours, as required.
Skills & Competencies:
+ Ability to triage clinical cases and veterinary emergencies.
+ Proficient in identifying abnormal clinical presentations across a variety of lab animal species.
+ Competence in administering medications by various routes and operating veterinary diagnostic equipment.
+ Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to document medical records accurately.
Education & Qualifications:
+ Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Animal Health Technology or an equivalent program.
+ Minimum of one year of practical experience performing veterinary technical procedures.
+ AALAS certification (ALAT, LAT, or LATG) is desirable.
