General Job Description
This is a managerial position responsible for serving as the university’s senior housing officer, providing strategic leadership for creating vibrant, engaging residential communities that enhance student well-being and academic success. Responsible for promoting residential experiences that foster student retention, personal development, and meaningful campus connections. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Assistant Vice President of Campus Services and Operations.
Essential Job Functions
1. Leads the comprehensive residential program, creating an engaging living-learning environment that supports student success and belonging.
2. Collaborates across the division to develop integrated support networks, programming, and health and well-being initiatives.
3. Fosters engaging communities that enhance student wellbeing, academic achievement, and personal growth.
4. Serves on divisional leadership teams to align residential initiatives with institutional retention goals.
5. Works together with housing administration to oversee campus housing operations, including facilities management and occupancy strategies.
6. Oversees fiscal planning and budget management to ensure sustainable operations.
7. Guides housing assignment processes to create balanced, supportive residential communities.
8. Works closely with divisional departments to ensure residential facilities and services meet evolving student needs and support well-being.
9. Builds and leads professional and student staff teams and fosters a collaborative work environment that promotes innovation and professional growth.
10. Creates comprehensive training programs that emphasize student support and community building.
11. Develops assessment strategies to measure program effectiveness and student success.
12. Designs programming that supports student transition, engagement, and retention.
13. Implements support systems that identify and assists students facing challenges.
14. Builds strong partnerships across academic and student support units and engages with campus partners to develop integrated student success strategies.
15. Participates in crisis response and student care initiatives.
Non-Essential Job Functions
1. Represents the department on various departmental, divisional, and university committees.
2. Works evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays when required.
3. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university and departmental policies and procedures.
2. Knowledge of best practices in residence life and housing occupancy.
3. Knowledge of student development theory, student conduct, Title IX, and higher education trends and issues.
4. Skill in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.
5. Skill in public speaking and delivering presentations to individuals and groups.
6. Ability to employ evidence-based best practices to implement and evaluate residential living, student discipline, and student organization advising models.
7. Ability to exercise professionalism and sound judgment in making critical decisions.
8. Ability to identify problems, evaluate alternatives, and recommend effective solutions.
9. Ability to manage a budget and work within the constraints of that budget.
10. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
11. Ability to maintain collaborative working relationships with students, faculty, staff, parents, and other university constituencies as well as the general public.
12. Ability to work effectively and ethically across cultural differences.
13. Ability to provide support for student development with a demonstrable concern for students.
14. Ability to engage students and to create and enhance their connection to the institution and each other.
15. Ability to work effectively and patiently with students.
16. Ability to work with and maintain confidential information.
17. Ability to handle difficult or stressful situations with professional composure.
18. Ability to train and supervise others.
19. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
Physical Demands
Required Education
Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, or a related field is required.
Required Experience and Training
Five years of related experience is required. Experience in university residential life program operations and progressive experience in housing and residential life, including supervision of professional staff, is required. Experience with leading a multi-faceted business unit is required. Budget management experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with residential learning communities is preferred.
