Position Description

Serco is seeking a Principal Engineer Software 2/3 to support our team in Middletown, Rhode Island. In this role, you will join a dedicated team designing, building, and delivering cutting-edge undersea warfare Training Systems for the U.S. Navy. Your contributions will directly support the modernization of software architecture for next-generation training capabilities.

In this role, you will:

+ Contribute to the design and development of new software solutions to improve the functionality and efficiency of submarine training systems.

+ Modernize existing software architectures to enhance scalability, performance, and maintainability using the latest technologies.

+ Implement and manage Apache Kafka for real-time data streaming and system responsiveness.

+ Develop scalable microservices to perform complex data processing and distribution tasks.

+ Design and maintain APIs to ensure interoperability and secure communication across training system components.

+ Work closely with system architects, engineers, and stakeholders to gather requirements and guide system-level design decisions.

Qualifications

Qualifications

This position may be filled at either the level 2 or level 3 depending on experience:

_Level 3 (Principal Software Engineer):_

+ Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of experience; OR Master’s degree with 3 years of experience.

+ Strong knowledge of object-oriented design, unit testing, debugging, and installation.

+ Fluency in C++ or Java.

+ Experience working in RHEL/CentOS Linux environments.

+ Ability to obtain a U.S. DoD Secret security clearance.

+ Must work on-site in Newport, Rhode Island.

_Level 2 (Software Engineer):_

+ Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of experience; OR Master’s degree with 0 years of experience.

+ Strong knowledge of object-oriented design, unit testing, debugging, and installation.

+ Fluency in C++ or Java.

+ Experience working in RHEL/CentOS Linux environments.

+ Ability to obtain a U.S. DoD Secret security clearance.

+ Must work on-site in Newport, Rhode Island.

Additional desired experience and skills:

+ Experience with Apache Kafka or other distributed systems.

+ Experience designing and implementing APIs.

+ Familiarity with virtualization (VMWare, RedHat KVM, VirtualBox).

+ Working knowledge of containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).

+ Proficiency with version control tools (Git, Bitbucket).

+ Familiarity with Agile methodologies and the Kanban framework.
