The Staff Electrical Design Engineer will make vital contributions to the Front End Innovation organization and transform patient care through innovation. They are responsible for working with Front End R&D teams to brainstorm, conceptualize, design, and develop electrical systems for next generation handheld surgical instruments.

Key Responsibilities:
+ Lead the brainstorming, concept development, design, and prototyping of printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs) to demonstrate technical feasibility for next generation handheld surgical instruments.
+ Work closely with multi-disciplinary teammates to develop robust and reliable architectures with electrical functionality driven by simulation, analysis, and test.
+ Lead debugging and root cause investigations on electrical and software related issues that arise during the prototype processes.
+ Translate high-level customer needs into technical options while analyzing trade-offs and business impact.
+ Build prototypes, products, and systems for testing including designing and executing test procedures, analyzing test results, and developing written reports.
+ Deliver documentation to support theory of operation, technical reviews, and engineering studies. Present technical material to partners at all levels of the organization.
+ Mentor junior members of the engineering staff to expand design team capabilities and establish good working practices.
Qualifications
Education:
+ Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or similar field required; dual degrees or advanced degree preferred
Experience and Skills:
Required:
+ Minimum 7 years of relevant work experience in a direct electrical engineering role
+ PCBA ideation, concept generation, design, prototyping, manufacturing, and troubleshooting experience
+ Experience with analog and digital circuitry design and development
+ Demonstrated proficiency in Cadence and/or Altium to design, simulate, and analyze circuit designs
+ Experience with embedded electrical design
+ Demonstrated ability to debug and test electrical systems using oscilloscopes and other test tools
+ Detailed understanding of board-level printed circuit design and signal integrity issues
+ Demonstrated ability working across subject areas with internal and external partners
+ Strong collaboration, proven technical leadership capabilities, and conflict resolution skills
Preferred:
+ Experience formulating and coordinating different engineering approaches to test hypotheses, such as hand calculations, computational modeling and simulation, empirical testing (benchtop and in vivo) and method development as appropriate
+ Experience with rigid-flex PCBAs and flex PCBAs
+ Experience with integration of motors in electrical systems
+ Knowledge and how to control DC motors (e.g. brushed, brushless, servo, etc.)
+ Experience with various communication protocols (e.g. Bluetooth, SPI, I2C, USB, UART, USART, etc.)
+ Demonstrated proficiency in Cadence and/or Altium for PCB layout
+ Design for electromagnetic compatibility and immunity, electrically fast transients, electrostatic discharge, etc.
+ Experience with IEC 60601-1, IEC 60601-2-2 etc.
+ Design for test, manufacture, and assembly
+ Experience with various programming languages (e.g. C, C++, Python, Labview, etc.)
+ Design control experience

+ Requires up to 10% travel, domestic and international travel
