    AI4CE Lab

New York University’s AI4CE lab (https://ai4ce.github.io) is a multidisciplinary research group led by Dr. Chen Feng (PI). The lab is dedicated to the advancement of fundamental automation and intelligence technologies such as robot perception and machine learning, with applications in various engineering domains that include construction, manufacturing, transportation, and smart cities. The lab’s mission is to develop novel algorithms and systems for intelligent agents to accurately understand and efficiently interact with materials and humans in dynamic and unstructured environments.

The lab is affiliated with multiple NYU departments and centers that include the Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP), Connected Communities for Smart Mobility towards Accessible and Resilient Transportation for Equitably Reducing Congestion (C2SMARTER), Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (CIMS), Department of Civil and Urban Engineering (CUE), Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE), and Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). The lab also has collaborations with industry partners such as Nokia Bell labs, Bosch Research, NVIDIA, etc.

The postdoc position at AI4CE lab will be fully funded to advance its core missions in AI and Robotics. The postdoc is expected to work on multidisciplinary projects to contribute to both methods and foundational knowledge in their core disciplines, as well as to novel data- and technology-driven applications. In addition to conducting independent research, the postdoc is expected to assist with the mentoring of students in the lab. Ideal candidates should meet the following criteria:

    • Strong publication record in areas that overlap with the lab’s recent and/or past publications, especially in top-tier AI/robotics conferences like CVPR/ICRA/NeurIPS/etc., or top automation journals like IEEE RA-L, Automation in Construction, etc.

    • Evidence and/or interest in conducting multi-disciplinary research

    • Experience and/or interest in teaching and mentoring

    • Interest in proposal writing with the intent to establish a record of externally funded research

The applicants’ proposed research must span the lab’s areas of expertise. Successful applicants will be expected to start new projects and collaborations and/or engage in existing projects with the AI4CE lab PI, Dr. Chen Feng, and encouraged to collaborate with other PIs within and beyond various units of NYU. The lab’s current application areas of focus include a broad range of cyber-physical systems (CPS) such as smart and accessible cities; connected and automated vehicles; civil infrastructure maintenance and management; assisted/automated design and fabrication; and urban data science. The lab’s methodological areas of interest include (a) computer vision, (b) robotics; (c) machine learning; and (d) sensing and IoT. We encourage applications in this wide range of AI areas and excellent applicants from other relevant areas.

This postdoc position is a full-time, non-tenured position for two years, with annual appointments renewed based on satisfactory performance. The position will be based in Brooklyn.

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $62,500, with competitive benefits, plus funds for travel and professional development. The expected start date is as early as Jan 1st, 2024.

Responsibilities: Conduct groundbreaking research both independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams; contribute to existing projects in the lab and start new projects and research collaborations as appropriate; participate in the development of research proposals; build bridges between the lab and other NYU labs, groups, and centers and beyond; publish in top venues in AI/Robotics; contribute to scholarly life in the lab through the organization of seminars, mentoring of students and other service

Doctoral degree in a relevant field (granted by the start of the position), and an active agenda of research and publication with a strong focus on one or more areas mentioned above.

Applicants should submit the following as part of the application package:

    • Cover letter (1 page)

    • Curriculum vitae

    • Research Statement (1~3 pages): This document should describe your research interests and plans at the lab. It should highlight how your previous research prepared you to conduct the proposed investigation. It should also describe how this position contributes to your future career. A graphical illustration of your past research experience and future research plan in 2~5 years is encouraged.

    • Contact information for two references.

Applications received by Dec 01, 2023, will receive full consideration. Any questions may be directed to Dr. Chen Feng at [email protected]
