Position Summary
The role of the Genetic Counseling Assistant will be to provide support to the genetic counseling staff in various administrative tasks. This work experience will provide invaluable experience for individuals who intend to apply for graduate programs in clinical genetics and genetic counseling or for individuals interested in pursuing a career in administrative management. There is a mandatory minimum time commitment of 2 years for this position.
Job Responsibilities
+ Assist with referral management by reviewing incoming referrals with the scheduling staff and responding to referring patients’ or providers’ basic questions about what to expect from the visit.
+ Assist with pre-visit preparation, including collection of relevant medical records and lab reports, medical record review, and coordination of patient intake forms.
+ Collect information from patients in preparation for their appointment including, but not limited to, a family history, risk assessment data, consent forms.
+ Assist in processing, packaging and shipment of specimens for genetic testing in a timely manner
+ Obtain and coordinate insurance pre-authorization for specialized laboratory testing as needed.
+ Maintain database of genetic consultation or other records.
+ Scan and upload documents into the electronic medical record system
+ Perform other duties as appropriate.
Education
+ Associate's Degree
Experience
+ Familiar with medical terminology and laboratory testing
Preferred skills:
+ Fluency in Span
+ Knowledge of genetics
+ Experience in working with patients in healthcare setting
+ Research experience a plus
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
+ Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
+ Excellent written and oral skills in English.
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills on both technical and non-technical topics.
+ Ability to participate as a team member member and work indepently, with limited supervision.
+ Independent decision making in area of expertise as it relates to position and in prioritizing workload, including as it relates to patient care, and ability to exercise good judgment.
