Position Summary
The Lead Clinical Pharmacist, Specialty Pharmacy Services plays a pivotal leadership role in ensuring high-quality, compliant, and patient-centered specialty pharmacy care across UVA Health’s rapidly growing ambulatory and specialty service lines. This role supports key clinical initiatives such as disease management, payer-driven outcomes reporting, accreditation compliance, and operational standardization across specialty pharmacy therapeutic areas, including rare disease and cell & gene therapies (CGT). The lead pharmacist serves as a clinical subject matter expert, oversees day-to-day clinical workflows, mentors pharmacists, and helps maintain UVA Health’s national leadership in innovative, outcomes-driven specialty pharmacy services.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Operations & Workflow Support
• Lead and support daily clinical pharmacy workflows across embedded and centralized teams, ensuring alignment with payer requirements and high-touch therapeutic service lines.
• Coordinate and troubleshoot complex patient therapy cases, ensuring timely interventions, continuity of care, and medication safety practices.
• Support specialty pharmacy Compass Rose EMR workflows, documentation standards, and interdepartmental handoff processes for therapy initiation and monitoring.
Training, Education & Mentorship
• Onboard, train, and mentor new pharmacists, students, and residents; serve as a preceptor and resource for clinical performance development.
• Standardize clinical practices and facilitate team huddles to disseminate updates on accreditation standards, payer expectations, and clinical best practices.
• Serve as a senior resource for clinical decision-making, evidence-based guidance, and therapeutic policy interpretation.
Compliance, Quality & Accreditation Readiness
• Ensure compliance with URAC, ACHC, and payer-specific clinical documentation and patient management program requirements.
• Lead clinical audit readiness, quality improvement initiatives, and follow-ups for medication safety and Be Safe reporting.
• Serve as the “senior clinical pharmacist” per accreditation definitions and lead quarterly quality management committee (QMC) review meetings.
Payer & Accreditation Reporting
• Support payer clinical data submission requirements including outcomes tracking, intervention documentation, and performance dashboards.
• Collaborate with the Accreditation, Compliance & Clinical Operations Manager on pharmacy quality programs and reporting to internal and external stakeholders.
Team & Communication Liaison
• Act as a liaison between clinical pharmacists, operations teams, patient medication access services, and provider partners to ensure cohesive patient care delivery.
• Participate in interdepartmental and cross-functional meetings to maintain alignment across clinical initiatives, systems, and care pathways.
Preferred Qualifications
• Specialty Pharmacy Board Certification (CSP) required or obtained within 12 months of hire.
• Demonstrated leadership in clinical pharmacy practice, specialty pharmacy accreditation (URAC, ACHC), quality initiatives, and interprofessional collaboration.
+ Enters prescribing clinician orders into the appropriate computer application.
+ Processes prescribing clinician’s orders (prescriptions).
+ Oversees pharmacy technicians’ work.
+ Provides drug information to patients caregivers and providers.
+ Performs pharmacy functions according to Federal State local Health System and Department statutes regulations and published guideline documents.
+ Oversees daily pharmacy operations and enhances the quality and delivery of care.
+ In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Position Compensation Range: $55.67 - $89.07 Hourly
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy or Pharm.D required
Experience: No experience required
Licensure: Virginia State Board of Pharmacy License. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job requires standing for prolonged periods. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull < 20lbs. May be exposed to chemicals **.**
