The Chief Technology Officer Organization’s vision is to raise the bar for technical excellence, talent, strategy, and standards across Technology. It also seeks to cultivate and foster technical innovation, as well as elevate and amplify the technical heartbeat of the organization.
The Legato engineering group is building technology to rapidly deploy the software that supports our issuing business. Our goal is to enable engineers at American Express to provision and deploy to public cloud infrastructure in minutes, not weeks, so that the company can move quickly to seize market opportunities and implement strategic priorities.
We’re looking for senior engineers to be part of an established team, in the early phases of our public cloud journey, with the opportunity to use modern languages and tools and to deploy software in public cloud environments. Our multi-functional team spans the stack, from front ends to APIs to databases, and they will have all the skills and resources they need to build, ship and operate their own software.
Some of the problems we'll work on include:
+ How to provide sensible defaults for infrastructure to engineers at American Express, whilst allowing for customization and ensuring that infrastructure is secure and compliant by default
+ Writing technical documentation used by thousands of engineers at American Express to understand and use platform components to manage infrastructure for their applications
+ Accelerating time-to-value for engineering teams at American Express, using tools and techniques such as developer portals, and application templates to enable infrastructure to be provisioned in minutes.
+ Enabling engineers at American Express to provision short-lived, ephemeral test environments for integration or performance testing in their CI/CD pipelines
As a Senior Engineer in our team, you will:
+ Scope and lead technical projects within an engineering team, helping team members plan and execute their work
+ Directly contribute to the design and coding of our products, serving as a role model for how great software is built at Amex
+ Take responsibility for the extensibility, security, scalability, and reliability of our software, ensuring that it meets our SLAs
+ Help drive sound technical decision making within our group and lead technical conversations with other engineering teams
+ Coach junior team members and delegate projects that develop their skills
Qualifications:
+ You have been working as an engineer implementing complex software projects in a variety of business and technology environments
+ You have significant experience designing systems that deliver critical business impact
+ You have experience with at least one cloud provider, preferably either AWS or GCP
+ You are skilled in gathering and synthesizing users’ feedback and experience with your software
+ You are effective at giving and receiving constructive feedback to/from peers, team members, and leaders
+ You work well multi-functionally, and your colleagues at all levels and across all teams trust you
+ You are comfortable working in ambiguously defined problem spaces and can identify the most valuable areas to direct your energy and deliver tangible results
Technologies we use at Amex include:
+ Go, Java, and JavaScript on the server, with Kotlin and TypeScript starting to make headway
+ React in the browser
+ Code lives in GitHub Enterprise and flows to production through a CI/CD pipeline built on GitHub Actions
+ Code runs in Kubernetes-managed Docker containers hosted in a mix of private and public clouds
+ Other key tech includes GraphQL, gRPC, Kafka, Terraform, Postgres, Couchbase, Cassandra, Elasticsearch, Redis, OpenTracing, Jaeger, Prometheus, and Grafana
In this position, you may choose to work either fully on-site or in a hybrid configuration, coming into a technology campus 3 days per week. Our teams are distributed across the UK and the US.
