    Job Summary and Qualifications

     

    The Director for Infection Prevention is a health care professional who works collaboratively with the medical and hospital staff to improve outcomes across the continuum of care. This position provides oversight for the Infection Prevention, Surveillance and Control Program; collects and abstracts data from charts; translates the data into actionable information; drives the performance improvement process; formulates committee reports; and, works collaboratively with other program managers, including facility and division leadership to standardize processes. Using principles of cost-containment, efficacy, efficiency and safety, the director coordinates activities that mitigate the risk of infection in patients, staff, physicians, families and visitors. Principles of epidemiology sound surveillance, prevention and control methods will be employed to improve performance and outcomes. This position is responsible for the oversight of the Infection Prevention Coordinators in the department; planning, developing and implementing program goals and operations which encompass education of staff and physicians. Participates in providing patient specific care standards as directed, serves as a role model for clinical and service excellence standards, ensuring levels of customer satisfaction. Manages all infection prevention-related activities.

     

    + You will conduct and evaluate surveillance systems for both community-acquired and healthcare-associated infections.

    + You will utilize data to drive performance improvement activities to reduce infection risk.

    + You will plan and conduct epidemiological investigations, research and other special studies related to infection prevention and implements interventions based on findings and data.

    + You will collaborate with Infectious Disease Physician lead.

    + You will collaborate with IP staff, other disciplines and departments to develop and/or update area-specific and hospital-specific policies and procedures pertinent to infection prevention principles which comply with various regulatory body rules, regulations and recommendations.

    + You will collaborate with public health officials, as needed, in response to investigative matters related to novel infections or other pertinent infectious agents.

    + You will demonstrate the ability to communicate IP information/data to departments, medical staff, Division leadership and/or committees as necessary to improve optimal patient care.

    + You will collect, report, and manage the data on communicable diseases as required by the Texas Department of State Health.

    + You will assist with education relative to the principles of infection prevention (asepsis, disinfection and sterilization, and isolation) for all staff in clinical, ancillary and support areas, including allied health and medical staff services in orientation and continuing education programs.

    + You will understand and monitor compliance with state and local regulations, including Joint Commission, CMS, OSHA, CDC, and pertinent standards/guidelines/regulations.

    + You will monitor clinical practices including those related to high-level disinfection; water-borne pathogen management; and other procedures in which risks to the patient, staff, or provider are present.

    + You will intervene in problematic infection prevention situations, assess infectious conditions with patients, staff and the environment, and implements appropriate control measures; communicate with physicians, staff and administration. Utilizes judgment in establishing priorities for interventions according to the risk to patient, staff, or hospital.

    + You will function as a department representative at facility and Division meetings as assigned.

    + You will identify opportunities for waste reduction and process efficiencies.

    + You will demonstrate adherence to information management policies and procedures, maintaining confidentiality of PHI and PPI at all times.

    + You will work as a team member through professional interactions, demonstration of appropriate communication skills and reporting/activation of the chain of command.

    What qualifications you will need:

    + Required: Bachelors of Nursing Degree or Bachelor’s Degree. Minimum two years infection control experience in a health care setting to include analytical, computer, teaching, speaking, and research skills; or minimum two years experience in a comparable management role.

    + Preferred: Three to five years of healthcare management experience including areas of direct oversight for this directorship. Working knowledge of Joint Commission Core Measures and or Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Hospital Quality Initiative.

    + LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES: Required: Currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in the state(s) of practice and/or has an active compact license, in accordance with law and regulation. FT/PT/PRN colleagues with a compact license from a state other than Texas must: apply for Texas RN license within 60 days from hire / obtain current TX RN license within 6 months of application for TX RN license

    + Certification by the Board of Infection Control (CBIC)
