    Summary This position is located within the FAA, Aviation Safety (AVS), Office of Aerospace Medicine (AAM), Deputy Federal Air Surgeon (AAM-2). The Office of Aerospace Medicine (AAM) develops and manages medical programs in support of Aviation Safety. Responsibilities Act as one of the Senior Advisors to the Deputy Federal Air Surgeon (DFAS), providing expert support for various medical and non-medical programs, specifically related to medical standards and the application of public health within the Office of Aerospace Medicine (AAM). Assignments are broad in scope and highly complex and are under the general direction of the DFAS. The advice and guidance given are consider as significance within the organization and AVS. The Physician is a recognized medical authority who manages highly complex and challenging activities under the minimal direction of top-level agency executives. The incumbent is recognized as authoritative, with a broad and intensive knowledge of their specialty area. The Physician's professional activities directly affect the national goals of the Office of Aerospace Medicine. Work contributes directly to the safety of civil aviation. Provides authoritative program advice to FAA management officials on a variety of difficult and highly complex issues. The issues are of significant interest to airmen, Congress, the aviation industry, and the flying public. The guidance given potentially affects aviation safety and the success or failure of agency programs. Serves as expert witness in legal cases involving application and interpretation of medical standards. Provide guidance in all technical aspects of interest in the sphere of public health preparedness. Perform substantive, multi-layered and/or multi-dimensional recommendations and/or courses of actions for the FAA public health preparedness for, response to, and recovery from disasters and public health emergencies impacting aviation and the National Air Space (NAS). Serve as advisor and contributing medical officer on large work activities, as a project manager or working group team lead or member. Fully responsible for assuring that the highest level of professional performance is applied to aerospace medical programs. Manages special projects. Prepares draft responses and presentations, as needed. Establishes and maintains contact with professional medical groups. Required to attend meetings of a top secret/sensitive compartment informational nature and various other meetings to exchange, persuade and negotiate matters on current developments related to aviation medicine. The position requires a license to practice medicine in a state or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia, as well as knowledge and experience in neurology. The Physician relates national missions and goals to resource requirements and acquires/allocates resources to accomplish national programs. Contacts are internal and external. The physician represents the FAA and Office of Aerospace Medicine, as the primary medical authority and senior point of contact on health, medicine, medical programs and activities. Also collaborates with other Federal Government partners to respond to foreign and domestic threats to the Aviation Ecosystem. Collaborates with physicians regarding revising policies, procedures, and correspondence to stakeholders to improve program effectiveness. Often develops new national and international policies, procedures, and approaches, taking into consideration FAA policies, seasoned professional judgment, and government-wide regulations. Qualifications BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association (external link); Association of American Medical Colleges (external link); Liaison Committee on Medical Education (external link); Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association (external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. (copies of transcripts must be uploaded) Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (external link), a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. (copy of licensure must be uploaded) Note: An agency may waive the licensure requirement for research positions not involving direct patient care. Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below. An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) (external link). A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association (external link), (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) (external link). A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training. AND, SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: All successful applicants must have five (5) years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled (Aviation Medicine) that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the position being filled. For instance, applicants will demonstrate experience in aviation medicine. Knowledge, skills, and abilities for work in this program area may have been acquired in fields such as occupational medicine, preventative medicine, or primary care (i.e., emergency medicine, general internal medicine, or family practice). Specialized experience includes developing and implementing policy related to medical standards, including the use of waivers for aeronauts' continued ability to fly; experience in neurology. AND, QUALITY RANKING FACTOR (QRF): Well qualified candidates will possess experience in either civilian and/or military aerospace medicine.
