    Job Summary

    The Pitha Lab is hiring a Lab Assistant. This person will be performing semi-technical laboratory and research procedures under the general supervision of senior laboratory personnel.

    Responsibilities

    Essential Functions

    1. Performs physical, chemical and biological tests according to established procedures.

    2. Prepares specimens according to established laboratory practices.

    3. Follows prescribed procedures for maintaining laboratory equipment and facilities.

    4. Prepares reagents, compounds, solutions and other media for research experimentation.

    5. Assist with inventory, ordering and stocking laboratory supplies and equipment.

    6. Maintains records of research data and may prepare charts or illustrations.

    7. May care for experimental animals, observe animals’ conditions and report unusual developments to the principal investigator or other senior lab personnel.

    8. May prepare animals for experimental procedures, administer drugs as instructed and assist in surgeries.

     

    Problem Solving

     

    The incumbent exercises limited judgment based on established procedures when planning methods, altering the physical aspects of project settings, and applying suitable techniques and procedures. Employees assist senior laboratory personnel in performing standardized physical, chemical, or biological tests. Sensitive or unusual situations are referred to the supervisor.

     

    Work is performed under the close supervision of senior laboratory personnel. Work is frequently reviewed for accuracy and to ensure adherence to research protocols.

     

    Comments

    Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

    Nearly Continuously: Office environment.

     

    Often: Infectious disease, oils ( _there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids_ ), hazards ( _includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals_ ).

     

    Seldom: Exposure to animals.

     

    Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required

     

    Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.

     

    Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting.

     

    Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

    Minimum Qualifications

    One year full-time laboratory experience or equivalency required (1 year full-time lab equivalency equals successful completion of 2 semesters laboratory college course work) ; knowledge of laboratory techniques, equipment and terminology as well as knowledge of chemical and physical properties of materials or substances and appropriate specimen handling techniques required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.

     

    This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
