POSITION DETAILS
The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, founded in 2006, has become nationally recognized for its innovative programs. It prepares students from diverse economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds to produce high-quality journalism.
As the profession continues to reinvent itself for the digital age, the Newmark J-School is at the forefront of equipping the next generation of journalists with the reporting, writing, interactive, technological, and entrepreneurial skills they need to find stories and tell them effectively. The school currently offers a Master of Arts in Journalism, a unique bilingual M.A. in Journalism for students fluent in English and Spanish, and the nation's first M.A. in Engagement Journalism.
Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Administration and Finance, the Director of Budget and Finance will lead and administer the daily operations of the Finance Department and serve as strategic partner with various campus leaders in developing the annual spending plans and budgets.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Develops and oversees the CUNY J-School tax-levy, non-tax-levy and Foundation budgets; this includes, preparing and providing departmental budgets to department heads; managing annual capital budget requests; managing the preparation of monthly expenditure reports; conducting variance analysis and preparing miscellaneous reports as needed;
- Oversees all financial operations including accounts payable, purchasing, and asset management in accordance with university policies and procedures; oversees all credit card transactions, reconciliation, and reclassification processes; serves as the chief liaison with vendors and service providers; Responsible for some payroll and bursar functions.
- Develops annual financial plan in consultation with the Assistant Dean on projected hires and other strategic goals; plans and achieves strategic financial and performance goals and objectives, and prioritizes them consistent with the schools mission and vision;
- Ensures compliance with a broad range of University-wide policies and procedures; in consultation with the Assistant Dean, develops and implements financial policies and procedures in accordance with university policies and New York State guidelines;
- Serves as the grants officer for all J-School Foundation funds and Chief Financial Officer for the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism Foundation, Inc.;
- Serves as the School s internal control officer and as chief liaison with internal and external auditors; manages audit process for annual university audits, journalism foundation, and individual audits on programmatic grants; manages mid-year and year-end closings, filing all required disclosures, reconciliations, and statements in keeping with the university controller s office closing schedule; serves on the Council of Business Managers;
- Works with the CUNY systems including the general ledger, accounts payable, HCM, ELM, and asset management, student financials and payroll;
- Collaborates with admissions, development office, and bursar s office on allocation of scholarship awards and/or stipends;
- Manages the College's revenue operations including projecting revenues based on current and future enrollment trends, monitoring revenue collections as compared to university targets, and developing models for revenue estimates;
- Research, plans and incorporates automated processes to promote efficiency and effectiveness; collaborates with University wide staff to identify opportunities for process improvements;
- Supervises and develops the finance and procurement team.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree and eight years' related experience required.
Preferred qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master s degree in Business Administration, Finance and/or Accounting and CPA highly preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
- Higher education experience.
- Highly motivated self-starter with supervisory experience proven ability to build high performing teams.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to collaborate with staff, faculty, the administration and the community.
- Ability to establish plans and manage multiple assignments with conflicting priorities.
- Must be detail oriented and accurate, with ability to work independently on multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Experience working with City University of New York, New York State or New York City Financial systems and business operations.
- Knowledge of New York State and City University of New York policies, procedures, and information systems.
- Proficiency in PeopleSoft, Workday, Salesforce and Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.

- Formulates, prepares and oversees financial plans and budgeting processes
- Manages all financial reporting and compliance activities, including preparation of financial statements, statistical reports, and funding determinations
- Liaisons with internal and external financial auditors as well as various College, University and governmental representatives
- Oversees analytical reporting and provides strategic financial guidance to support decisions regarding resource allocations and operational planning
- Manages professional staff responsible for budget projections, allocations and transactions
- Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
$129,310 - $141,858. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
