Job Description
Position Title: EL Intervention Specialist
Salary Range: Teacher Salary
Contract Length: Teacher Contract
Immediate Supervisor: Principal
Basic Function: Assist and support colleagues in the implementation of strategies for English Learners (EL) at the building level by sharing proven instructional techniques and materials. Monitor the school’s EL interventions and coordinate with the overall school literacy program to ensure quality instruction and to improve EL students’ reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Provide intervention to identified EL students.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
+ EL Intervention Specialists will provide intervention support 50% of the school day to identified students at risk of failing or who are failing in reading, language arts and/or math.
+ Works with struggling students during the 8-Step Success period.
+ Intervention Specialists will work directly with teachers to suggest possible alternative teaching methods and ideas for EL students, including the following:
+ Demonstrate exemplary classroom language-acquisition practices.
+ Provide professional development on secondary language acquisition theory.
+ Work with teachers individually or in collaborative teams, providing practical support on a full range of reading, writing, and listening strategies for EL students.
+ Provide leadership for integration of EL strategies and practices across the school community.
+ Help strengthen family and school ties by engaging families in English language instruction.
Qualifications:
+ Possess a valid teaching license with an ESL endorsement and at least two years experience teaching EL students.
+ Have knowledge of research-based instructional strategies, methodology, and materials for EL students.
+ Be able to model various scaffolding techniques for EL students.
+ Have knowledge of second-language acquisition theory and practice.
+ Possess the ability to differentiate instruction and to develop Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) for EL students with various English proficiency levels.
+ Demonstrate above average ability to communicate and work well with others, successful teaching experiences, thorough and complete knowledge of ELP standards and content of grade level areas, and proven leadership ability.
+ Ability to conduct successful staff development; advanced knowledge of reading and writing processes; ability to conduct regular meetings with administrators, to assist in the collaboration of the school-wide reading plan, to train teachers on the implementation of Individual Learning Plans, to interpret Language Assessment Scale data and other EL standardized test results and to disaggregate this data for instructional purposes.
+ REQUIRED summer training.
Physical Demands:
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other technologies and office equipment, sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time; kneeling; bending at the waist; lifting; pushing; pulling and carrying equipment, supplies and materials weighing up to 25 pounds; repetitive hand movement and fine coordination to use a computer keyboard; emotional stability to work effectively under pressure and to keep all aspects of the job under control; hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone; seeing to read; prepare and assure the accuracy of documents.
