    The Department of Marine Resources, Division of Marine Mammal Research, is looking to fill a vacant,limited period,Marine Resource Specialist position out of West Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

     

    BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION:The Department of Marine Resources (DMR) is hiring a Marine Resource Specialist II to work on projects in the Survey Program within the Division of Marine Mammal Research. The position will be responsible for assisting with planning, coordinating, and implementing visual surveys to detect endangered North Atlantic right whales in the Gulf of Maine and inform the conservation and management of the species. Tasks will include implementing the logistics for aerial and vessel-based surveys. This position will conduct field work, collect, enter, and audit data, and perform data analysis under supervision. This position will act as lead workers in the field with contracted and seasonal staff. Additionally, they may also be responsible for a scientific project including reviewing plans, methods, analyses, results, and recommendations. Work is performed under limited supervision. Finally, the positions will work across programmatic lines within the Division of Marine Resources to foster collaboration and maximize DMR’s strengths.

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES PREFERRED:Knowledge of Mysticetus LLC. software, distance sampling and/or distance software is strongly preferred. Also preferred is sea time spent aboard marine mammal research vessels conducting line-transect surveys, flight hours in marine mammal research aircraft, experience with photo-identification of North Atlantic right whales, and general marine species identification in the Northwest Atlantic. The successful candidate should be able to conduct research activities in a variety of weather conditions. Knowledge of the coast of Maine and its relevant fisheries are also preferred but not required. There is a preference for a candidate with experience in spatial and statistical analyses, and relational databases. Knowledge of MS Office products, R, SQL, and GIS (R & ArcGIS Pro). This position requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

     

    This position will have the potential for hybrid remote work capabilities with prior authorization from the managing authority.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Intermediate education, training, and/or experience in the compilation and summarization of scientific field and laboratory data including coursework or demonstrated experience in natural resource science, management, technology, laboratory, or field work.
