Duties Description This position is located within the bureau of Member & Employer Services, Division of Retirement Services and is responsible for:Registers, acknowledges, gathers necessary information, and/or rejects requests for erroneous contribution refunds; Receive, review and acknowledge member requests to transfer internally, between NYSLRS’ Employees Retirement System and Police and Fire Retirement System, to other reciprocal pension system in New York State, into one of our Systems from another retirement system in New York State and under Chapter 390 of the Retirement and Social Security Law.- Utilizing required knowledge of the NYS Retirement and Social Security Law, the Codes Rules and Regulations of the State of NY as well as NYSLRS Policies and Procedures and Internal Revenue Service and Military Law incumbents perform highly customized clerical processing and records maintenance activities to open a Miscellaneous Adjust Case, review material associated with a transfer of membership into our system, perform service determinations to ascertain eligibility for erroneous contribution refunds; open the appropriate transfer of membership Business Project, including registering, acknowledging, and gathering necessary information, and/or rejecting requests to transfer. As part of this process, the incumbents must perform manual service credit calculations to ensure the member’s service is accurate for our fiscal years. The incumbent will review and audit membership records and employment history and ensure system information is recorded accurately and timely.Manage case inventory to ensure timely and accurate processing.- Utilizing daily, weekly and monthly reports and checklists within each online case, manage a high volume of open cases. Develop strong organizational skills needed to regularly review incoming correspondence and to monitor system-generated follow up requests to keep cases moving toward completion.Ascertains and requests necessary employer documentation, member records, certificates, and other information. - Utilize on-line queries, and/or contact, by mail or phone, appropriate persons or entities including employers and members to obtain information necessary to determine a member’s eligibility to transfer, dates of employment, service credit available for purchase or erroneous contribution refunds due. Respond timely and effectively to routine employer and member inquiries. Communicate complex information about retirement benefits in a clear and concise manner to facilitate informed choices.

Please review the desired competencies section of this posting for desired qualifications.For appointment to an Employees’ Retirement System Examiner 1 (full journey level, SG-9), you must have:• One year of experience performing at least one of the following tasks: reconciling accounts, calculating payments, collecting and analyzing statistics and information, or explaining policy or benefit information to the public.Competitive Minimum Qualifications:You must be currently reachable on the appropriate eligible list for this title, or eligible to transfer to this title under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law. Depending on qualifications, candidates may be required to serve a one-year traineeship that leads to an Employees’ Retirement System Examiner 1, SG-9 position.70.1 Transfer:To be eligible for a 70.1 transfer to Employees’ Retirement System Examiner 1, SG-9, you must have one year of permanent competitive, or 55-b/55-c service in a qualifying title allocated to a salary grade 7 or above.To be eligible for a 70.1 transfer to Employees’ Retirement System Examiner Trainee, equated to SG-6, you must have one year of permanent competitive, or 55-b/55-c service in a qualifying title allocated to salary grade 6 or above.To determine if your current Civil Service title is eligible for transfer to this title, visit the Career Mobility GOT-IT website: Career Mobility Office » GOT-IT (ny.gov)Appointments via transfer must not result in a second, consecutive transfer with an advancement of more than two S-grades or one M-grade.55b/55c Program appointment:This position may be designated 55 b/c and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility. Salary is nonnegotiable. Candidates hired at the trainee level will be advanced to the full performance Employees’ Retirement System Examiner 1 SG-9 following successful completion of the traineeship.
