    Job Description

    General Description

    The Surgical Technology Program at Kingsborough Community College seeks a part-time College Laboratory Technician (CLT). The CLT is responsible to the Program Director for fulfilling both mentoring and non-mentoring activities. The CLT will use appropriate standard aseptic techniques recommended by the AST.

     

    The CLT plays an integral role in the students’ development of knowledge and skills needed to successfully achieve the expected learning outcomes as described in each course syllabus. Assists instructors with the preparation of lab courses and guides students through the practical skills sessions of the program. This note that this position is 100% in-person, Monday - Friday from 8:30am – 4:30 pm.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    The successful candidate will be expected to:

    + Organize and prepare supplies, instruments and equipment necessary for practical training

    + Be present for open lab hours for lab practice and skills remediation

    + Use appropriate techniques to provide students with the knowledge needed to achieve the learning outcomes for each surgical technology lab course offered

    + Assure that all students are taught skills properly using the AST recommended aseptic practices when demonstrating skills during open lab training

    + Assure that students are supervised during skill practice sessions

    + Assist with students’ preparation for the NBSTSA National Examination and run exam reviews

    + Be a good role model for students

    + Bring problems to the attention of the immediate supervisor

    + Be an objective evaluator for the skill examinations and evaluations

    + Maintains records of the student’s performance and activities during open lab sessions

    + Maintain contact with all professors who send their students to the lab for remediation

    + Maintains knowledge of program goals

    + Maintains current knowledge of the professional discipline and educational methodologies through continuing professional development

    + Maintains records of supplies and inventories

    + Gather all information for purchase orders each semester

    + Participate in all program meetings

    + Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    + Minimum of an Associate’s Degree in Applied Sciences in Surgical Technology from a CAAHEP accredited program and hold a current NBSTSA Certification (Certified Surgical Technologist).

    + A minimum of five (5) years of work experience as a surgical technologist, and have at least (1) year active participation on either precepting students in the operating room or laboratory teaching in the field of surgical technology.

    + Have appropriate professional and/or occupational, organizational and excellent interpersonal skills.
