    Responsibilities

    The Director of Nursing is responsible for all aspects of nursing care delivery in the facility. They will assume responsibility as a department lead of the OR, Preop, and PACU. The Director of Nursing is also responsible for overseeing the facilities quality improvement, risk management, infection control, and education of the teammates. The successful candidate will:

     

    + Provide leadership oversight to ensure patient needs are met in accordance with instructions of physician and facility’s policies & procedures.

    + Demonstrate respect for co-workers & leadership and develops positive working relationships within departments.

    + Provide direction to others that is clear, concise and promotes efficiency throughout the clinical areas of the facility.

    + Recognize legal policy limits and individual practice.

     

    This position will oversee the daily clinical operations of Blue Ridge Surgery Center and work with the related professional offices to ensure quality patient care and to maintain the Center’s premier reputation within the community. This position reports directly to the CEO Administrator. The Director of Nursing will be responsible for the clinical setting and will manage entire clinical operations of the facility, including all of the clinical staff at the facility. This position is responsible for nursing services, daily clinical staffing and the efficient flow of patients through the surgery center. In addition, the Director of Nursing will oversee management of clinical supplies and staff as well as ensure that all policies are followed. He/she will also be a member of the Continuous Quality Improvement, Risk Management, Infection Control and Safety Committees. The Director of Nursing will fulfill the role of Facility Educator. The Director of Nursing will be responsible for organizing/managing all manuals and studies necessary for continued certification and accreditation, maintaining appropriate documentation. He/she will function as a working Nursing Manager, taking on the role of Pre-op, OR nurse or PACU nurse, as needed.Responsibilities:The duties and responsibilities of the Director of Nursing include, but are not limited to:Fiscal Responsibility

     

    + Promotes cost containment and efficient use of center resources.

    + Coordinates purchasing of clinical equipment/supplies to provide optimum patient care within budget allowances.

    + Analyzes work area and makes recommendations for potential cost-effective improvements.

    + Staffs the Center as efficiently as possible when there are known down-times (vacations, etc.)

     

    Clinical

     

    + Determines and schedules appropriate staffing assignments to support the flow of patients through the procedure area. Keeping in mind patient care needs and budgetary constraints, discusses changes in staffing with the CEO Administrator.

    + Completes competency worksheets during the employees’ introductory period (To be done within 30 days), keeping the employee aware of their successes and areas that need improvement.

    + Acts as the onsite expert in clinical skills, being a resource and mentor for other staff members and performing one on one teaching as needed to enhance the learning of new skills.

    + Monitors the daily flow of patients making recommendations for efficiency or customer service. Conducts ongoing room utilization studies.

    + Acts as the Medical Records Supervisor, who along with the Administrator, has overall supervisory responsibility for the entire medical record system.

    + Acts as onsite expert for the charting record and dictation system, assisting the Physicians and staff in learning the system and troubleshooting problems.

    + Plans in-services for the clinical staff that expand their knowledge of Surgical Specialties, and the equipment used during these surgeries.

    + Assures compliance to all clinical policies and procedures, and bringing to the attention of the CEO Administrator and the Medical Directors any problems with Physician or staff compliance.

     

    Supervision of Staff

     

    + Daily supervision of clinical staff as well as charge nurses. Direct management of 5 direct reports, OR nurse manager, Pre-op/PACU nurse manager, Surgical Tech Supervisor, Quality Standards Coordinator and Purchasing Coordinator.

    + Manages the hiring process of all clinical staff. Ensures that all new hire forms, verifications, and screening is completed correctly and submitted to HR in a timely manner.

    + Working with the CEO Administrator, conducts and documents disciplinary actions, as necessary, in consultation with HR for all clinical staff.

    + Working with the CEO Administrator, conducts clinical employee evaluations annually, and provides input as needed, for all Center staff.

    + Recommends salary changes, documents personnel changes and submits completed paperwork in a timely fashion. Responsible for 90 Day Introductory evaluations and the annual performance appraisal of all clinical staff.

    + Submits all personnel changes on a timely basis.

    + Monitors and approves timesheets and Time & Attendance System for all clinical staff and submits accurate time summary to the CEO Administrator for biweekly payroll by predetermined due date/time.

    + Ensures that policies are adhered to concerning the accrual and usage of PTO (Paid Time Off).

    + Ensures that all Policies and Procedures are explained to staff and that these policies are followed.

    + Working with the CEO Administrator, conducts regular staff meetings and maintains meeting minutes for these meetings.

     

    Purchasing

     

    + Oversees and matches of all approved packing slips with invoices for drugs and clinical supplies.

    + Oversees coding of invoices for payment and submits to the CEO Administrator.

    + Oversees the monitoring and tracking all returns to ensure that Center receives the appropriate credit.

    + Assists clinical staff with ordering of the clinical supplies. Ensures that order is within budget/contract that was negotiated.

    + Formulates cost effective measures in the clinical areas and implements such within fiscal guidelines or submits to the CEO for review/approval.

    Miscellaneous Duties

    + Closes the Center at the end of the day when necessary, locking the Medical Records cabinetry, and securing all areas prior to setting the alarm.

    + Attends meetings for the Governing Body and Executive Committees as needed, and presents clinical items to the Board of Managers.

    + When required, initiates a “911” call, and gives information according to policy.

    + Performs additional duties as directed by the CEO Administrator or Medical Director (within the scope of training).

    + Participates as the clinical team member of the CQI, Infection Control, Risk Management, and Safety Committees. Assigns staff as needed to these committees. Prepares agendas and writes all reports for these committees.

    + Directs the ordering and inventorying of all supplies, medical supplies and medications.

    + Keeps updated on all surgeries, through reading and/or attendance at local or national meetings.

    + Leads team through any cardiac or respiratory emergency.

    + Working with the CEO Administrator, monitors the environment of care, including temperature, cleanliness, sterility, operational ability, ventilation, lighting, etc.

    + Serves as the nursing team leader during any emergency situation concerning patients.

    + Working with the CEO Administrator, responsible for writing reports on all Emergency Drills.

    + Oversees the Centers Quality Management Nurse/Coordinator and on-site Infection Control Nurse.

    + Responsible for updating all manuals in the Center necessary for certification and accreditation, inserting any changes/additions into the manual.

    + Conducts chart reviews to check for completeness and enforces the need for consistency in documentation. Reviews chart review worksheets completed by the nursing staff, making corrections/suggestions as needed.

    + Acts as the nursing liaison between the Center and the Physicians.

    + Functions as a working Nursing Manager, taking on the role of admitting nurse, procedural nurse or recovery room nurse as needed.

    + Maintains center and equipment to ensure cleanliness, sterility, and operational ability at all times

    + Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    + BS or equivalent college degree and current state RN license.

    + Prior experience in a Management role, including supervisory experience, infection prevention and quality control services.

    + ACLS certified, with current experience in Ambulatory Surgical Centers.

    + Familiarity with state, Medicare and Joint Commission accreditation preferred.

    + Proficient in computer programs including EXCEL, Outlook, and WORD.

    + Strong organizational and analytical skills.

    + Proficient in optimizing workflows and enhancing operational efficiency.

    + Experienced in identifying inefficiencies and implementing effective solutions.

    + Skilled in streamlining processes to achieve continuous improvement.

    + Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

     

    Job Relationships

     

    + Reports directly to the CEO Administrator.

    + Directly supervises all clinical staff to facilitate the seamless and efficient functioning of the Center.

    + Works cooperatively and communicates regularly with the CEO Administrator, Medical Director(s) of the Center and all Surgeons at BRSC.

    + Presents a friendly, courteous, and helpful manner in all interactions with patients, vendors and other offices.

     

    Physical Activities and Requirements

     

    + Good physical health, capable of working in a demanding environment.

    + Job involves extended hours standing, bending, and stretching with frequent trips to all areas of the Center. May involve long hours at a computer.

    + Able to lift, and carry supplies and equipment as needed. (Up to 15 pounds)

    + Manual dexterity, hearing acuity, and visual acuity are important to the performance of the job tasks.

    + Must speak clearly and distinctly, as there will be extensive interaction with staff, patients and their families and physicians.

    + Jewelry must be kept to a minimum so it does not interfere with procedures.

    + The dress code will be scrub attire as per policy.

    + Involves extended hours at a desk/computer with frequent trips to other areas of the facility.
