The Department of Transportation is currently seeking a qualified individual to fill the role of Transportation Technician. This position involves supporting the inspection of various transportation design projects and evaluating the materials utilized to ensure they meet the established contract plans and specifications. The successful candidate will be part of the Design Division within the Engineering District 3-0 Organization, playing a crucial role in maintaining the integrity and quality of transportation infrastructure. DESCRIPTION OF WORK
In this position, you will support the Drill Operator Supervisor in ensuring that assignments are completed promptly to prevent any delays in lettings. The department is currently increasing its collection of pavement cores due to a shift in district pavement design policy and heightened demands from the oil and gas sector. It is essential to maintain the cleanliness, lubrication, and overall condition of tools such as spoons, drill rods, augers, and other small equipment to avoid interruptions during drilling operations. You will be required to travel independently to various work sites within the District and report directly to these locations as necessary. Additionally, fostering positive and constructive interactions with colleagues and the public is crucial. Your responsibilities will also include providing traffic control by setting up appropriate signage and flagging in accordance with Pub 213. In terms of technical studies and data collection, you will assist in identifying soil and rock types from collected samples, perform various tests such as standard penetration tests, Shelby tube tests, and vane shear tests, as well as label and ship samples and help install and monitor slope indicator casings. Furthermore, you will be responsible for providing transportation to job sites, effectively communicating with others both verbally and through written correspondence in English, and completing necessary paperwork such as payroll, travel vouchers, and hotel vouchers. Other related duties may be assigned as needed.
You will also assist Engineers and Technicians in preparing essential documents, which will require proficiency in using a personal computer and basic Windows functions. Familiarity with systems such as EDMS, ECMS, BMS2, and MPMS will be necessary, along with sorting through paper files to identify those that need to be scanned. Maintaining your assigned work area, including the state vehicle, in a clean and safe condition is imperative, and you must adhere to proper safety procedures and utilize protective equipment. Daily, you will perform a "circle of safety" check on your assigned vehicle before operation, ensuring that fluids such as oil and coolant are at appropriate levels, all lights—including headlights, turn signals, brake lights, back-up lights, and revolving lights—are functioning correctly, and that tires are properly inflated. Should you notice any new physical damage, it is your responsibility to notify the RMS Coordinator immediately.
