Job Description
This position at the Legislative Service Bureau Print Shop encompasses all aspects of the prepress composition department. Employees work independently to provide proofreading, typesetting, formatting, design, and platemaking for the State Legislature with an emphasis on technical and grammatical quality control. Employee is expected to have basic knowledge of offset and digital print production methods and contributes to all prepress processes.Job duties include, but are not limited to:
+ Proofreads legislative session documents and publications to correct errors in typing, spelling, punctuation, English usage, and layout. Ensures that documents maintain style consistency.
+ Proofreads print and digital files for grammatical errors, typos, punctuation mistakes, and inconsistencies in text content.
+ Performs quality checks on all print jobs at different stages of production.
+ Communicates identified errors or concerns to team members for necessary corrections. Checks revised proofs to ensure that all corrections/changes have been made.
+ Prepares metal plates (burning/processing and inspection) for the pressroom.
+ Prepares and reviews graphic files for print production.
+ Ensures that client needs as well as in-house style guidelines are followed to maintain quality results.
+ Ensures compliance with Council Printing Rules.
+ Aids in various facets of pre-press and composition responsibilities, including plate production and typesetting legislative documents.
+ Handles a high volume of work with pressing deadlines on a daily basis.
This a full-time, on-site job. Work hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm (37.5 hours per week). Overtime and flexible shifts may be required as needed to meet legislative needs.
The LSB Legislative Printing Division is part of the Michigan Legislative Council, a nonpartisan legislative information and service agency. This is a union shop that provides composition and printing services for the production of legislative materials.
Required Education and Experience
+ Must possess high school diploma or GED Certificate.
+ One year of proofreading and copy-editing experience preferred.
+ Minimum 5 years pre-press experience in typesetting and page layout.
+ Demonstrates a thorough understanding of grammar, punctuation, and proper English usage in writing.
+ Considerable working knowledge of PC and/or MAC operating systems.
+ Excellent work attendance and punctuality a must.
+ Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required.
+ Ability to be self-motivated and work independently while also communicating effectively within a team required.
+ Strong interpersonal and communication skills required.
+ Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and proofread quickly and accurately under pressure and tight deadlines required.
+ Must be willing and able to work overtime and irregular hours as required, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Leave Time

Deferred Compensation
Employees may invest income in a tax-deferred retirement investment program. The state offers two optional deferred compensation plans, the 457 and 401(k). Employees decide the amount deducted from each paycheck.
Retirement
Employees receive a minimum 4% state contribution toward their defined contribution retirement fund. If an employee elects to contribute more, the state will match that percentage (up to 3%).
