    Peckham Inc. - HOPES Employment Specialist

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The HOPES Program serves young adults aged 18–24 in Flint, MI, who are connected to the justice system and/or affected by community violence. Through culinary and customer service training, education, and paid work experiences, the program prepares participants for long-term employment—regardless of their chosen career path.

     

    The HOPES Specialist plays a central role in delivering employment readiness services by facilitating the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation’s (NRAEF) Restaurant Ready curriculum and Cognitive Behavioral Interventions for Employment (CBI-EMP). This includes teaching both technical and soft skills, leading credentialing opportunities, and supporting participants through case management, crisis intervention, and family engagement.

     

    Ideal candidates are passionate about youth development, workforce training, and using food service and hospitality as tools for personal and professional transformation.

    MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    + Provide person-centered case management services to HOPES participants

    + Deliver one-on-one coaching, crisis intervention and/or training with program participants

    + Primary Instructor for Restaurant Ready and CBI-EMP skills, resume development, interview preparation, and life skills discussions

    + Provide needed social supports including obtaining personal documents, driver’s licenses, housing support, coordinating with other social service agencies, and public benefits

    + Facilitate Work Experiences and job placements with employer partners

    + Work with program staff to coordinate appropriate referrals to community partners including Community Mental Health, Michigan Rehabilitation Services, Michigan Works!, and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services

    + Develop and maintain community employment placements and complete follow up support

    + Maintain an accurate record of participant progress, engagement, services, and incentives

    + Regular communication with parole/probation officers to coordinate support services and program activities

    + Complete transition plan and 12 months follow up services for each participant

    + Process initial intake documents; Develop and maintain electronic case files for program participants

    OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    + Process initial intake documents; Develop and maintain electronic case files for program participants

    + Communicate with community agencies and provide information about community resources to enhance support services for program participants

    + Conduct orientation sessions for new program participants

    + Work with an interdepartmental team to monitor participants’ progress and enhance the quality of services provided

    + Research and build resources and team knowledge to help Team Members navigate community resources and internal resources so they can develop independence and self-sustainability

    + May attend community and Peckham events throughout the year

    + Maintain a safe and clean work environment

    + Assist in the training of people with disabilities as needed

    + Promote Peckham’s vision, values, and services with highest integrity and ethics to all customers and stakeholders

    + Assist in maintaining organization wide quality standards

    + Miscellaneous related duties as assigned

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    + Must be able to pass and maintain federal and state background checks

    + Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in a related field OR 3–5 years of directly related experience

    + Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across diverse cultures

    + Strong communication and writing skills

    + Demonstrated experience in mentoring, coaching, or youth support

    + Conflict resolution and de-escalation abilities

    + Ability to maintain strict confidentiality

    + Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel

    + Ability to learn internal systems such as Workday and OnTime or other HRIS platforms

    + Ability to research and coordinate support using internal and community resources

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    + Degree or professional credential in education, social work, workforce development, or a related field

    + CBI-EMP Instructor Credential (or willingness to obtain)

    + Firsthand or lived experience with incarceration or community violence

    + Experience delivering trauma-informed or clinical support services

    + Knowledge of community human services resources and networks

    + Strong organizational skills with a focus on quality and problem-solving

    + Ability to manage stress in high-pressure situations
