    Position Summary

    The Director of Research in the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics serves as a strategic partner of and will report directly to the Department Chair. The Department is looking for a creative and accomplished individual to drive the execution of key goals by working with the Chair and faculty to identify new funding streams; supporting the Chair and the faculty in serving as a project manager for recruiting new faculty; raising the profile of the department internally and externally; positioning the Department to be a focal point for biochemistry, biophysics, and mechanistic cell biology within Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) and the Tri-Institute (WCM, Sloan Kettering Institute and Rockefeller University) community; and developing a collaborative, productive, and supportive culture within the department.

     

    The Director works closely with Weill Cornell’s Director for Research Business Management (RBM), the Department’s assigned Administrative Manager, and leadership across the campus and the Tri-Institute community.

    Job Responsibilities

    + Identifies funding opportunities for individual labs, strategically targeting and matching initiatives with individual research programs.

    + Identifies collaborative funding opportunities.

    + Serves as the project manager for faculty searches.

    + Develops plans for space allocation in coordination with the Chair, Administrative Manager, and the Research Dean’s office.

    + Works with the Administrative Manager to oversee lab moves and space renovations. Directly responsible for annual space survey and space functionalization reporting.

    + Develops programming to support faculty development, trainee, and staff career development.

    + Serves as a project manager for the Department’s Seminar Series, as well as research in progress talks within and outside the department.

    + Supports the Chair with annual faculty reviews and mentoring meetings.

    + Represents the Department in meetings organized by the Dean’s office for department administrators and manages relationships with the administrative teams of collaborating research units

    + In consultation with department laboratories, oversees and supports the logistics of maintaining core research facilities and equipment in the Department, and identifies and develops opportunities for new shared research facilities and services.

    + Collaborates with institutional leadership to support college-wide research and educational initiatives, including faculty nominations to scientific societies and academies, press releases, and selections for limited submission grant opportunities.

    + Directs and oversees internal and external departmental communications, including managing web sites and social media activity.

    Education

    + PhD in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Biophysics, Neuroscience, or related scientific field.

    Experience

    + Approximately 4 plus years’ experience in administration in an Academic Medical Center or Academic environment, or prior administrative and management experience in a related field.

    + Experience with federal research grants.

    + Broad scientific background.

    + Previous experience in project conception, organization, oversight, and research collaboration.

    + Experience in leveraging budgets, forecasts, and financial plans.

    + Proficiency with Zoom, Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, and Excel), and Mac-based operating systems is required (Mac computer will be provided).

    + Familiarity with academic research environment is preferred.

    + Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat, Dropbox, Google apps, Keynote, Slack, and online calendaring/scheduling systems is preferred.

    + Strong leadership, management, organizational, analytical, negotiation, and conflict management skills.

    + Excellent written and verbal communication skills; the ability to communicate with both scientific and lay audiences.

    + Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills; detail-oriented.

    + Acts independently and as part of a team.

    + Interacts professionally and diplomatically with faculty, researchers, staff, and visitors with a variety of backgrounds and roles.

    + Able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines.

    + Handles sensitive issues and confidential information with discretion.

    + Capacity to learn new programs and technologies.
