As a Principal Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in the development and implementation of our Microservices Platform. Your responsibilities will include improving our Service Mesh and Service Registry, debugging software applications, and ensuring optimal system performance. Collaborating with software architects, you will help to transform requirements into software design, adhering to our architectural standards. Mentorship and innovation will be key aspects of your role, as well as ensuring that our engineering efforts align with strategic objectives.

Building the right technology foundation for Infrastructure & platforms is vital to success at the scale of Walmart. Our team builds and maintains the foundational technologies that support the tech organization. Included in this are data platforms, enterprise architecture, DevOps, cloud computing, and infrastructure. All of these products and services are supported by scalable and powerful infrastructure, ensuring a secure and seamless employee and customer experience across stores, digital channels, and distribution centers.
What you'll do:
**Microservices Platform Development** : Spearhead the development and implementation of our microservices platform projects to enhance the overall efficiency of our service-to-service communication. **Service Mesh Enhancement** : Take charge of improving our service mesh, which is designed to control, manage, and make our service-to-service communication visible and reliable. **Service Registry Management** : Oversee the service registry, a global control plane to control all services within the Walmart network. **Istio and Envoy Development** : Utilize Istio, an open-source service mesh, and Envoy, a high-performance proxy, to manage traffic flows between microservices, enforce access policies, and aggregate telemetry data. **Software Debugging and Performance Optimization** : Analyze and debug software applications, applying your expertise in service-to-service communication and microservices platforms to ensure optimum system performance. **Mentorship and Innovation** : Provide guidance to junior team members, fostering a culture of innovation and strategic thinking within the team.
What you'll bring:
7+ years of experience in the relevant industry.
Mastery of at least one of the following languages: Java, C++, Golang, Rust, Scala, Node.js.
Extensive experience with network stacks, including thorough understanding of HTTP/s, TCP, UDP, TLS / mTLS, etc.
Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies like Docker, Kubernetes, etc.
Familiarity with cloud native technologies and environments such as Google Cloud and Azure.
Knowledge of microservice architecture patterns and best practices.
Familiarity of Service Mesh or Sidecar pattern, including technology stack such as Istio, Envoy etc.
Experience with API design and development.
Familiarity with continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) and automation tools.
Strong understanding of system monitoring tools and techniques.
Ability to design and implement robust service-level testing frameworks.
Strong understanding of secure coding practices and ability to identify and mitigate security vulnerabilities.
Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to debug complex systems.
Good communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
Experience with Agile development methodologies.
Familiarity with performance optimization techniques.
Knowledge of infrastructure as code (IAC).
Familiarity with observability tools for logging, monitoring, and tracing.
Proven ability to mentor junior engineers and guide them in best practices.

Sunnyvale, California US-11349:The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00-$286,000.00
Bentonville, Arkansas US-10735:The annual salary range for this position is $110,000.00-$220,000.00
Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses.
