Comcast NBCUniversal has announced its intent to create a new publicly traded company ('Versant') comprised of most of NBCUniversal's cable television networks, including USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, E!, SYFY and Golf Channel along with complementary digital assets Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow, GolfPass, and SportsEngine. The well-capitalized company will have significant scale as a pure-play set of assets anchored by leading news, sports and entertainment content. The spin-off is expected to be completed during 2025.
The Weekend Director of Domestic Newsgathering is responsible for overseeing all aspects of 24/7 newsgathering operations during weekends. This senior editorial role manages breaking news response, coordinates field teams, collaborates with weekend shows, and ensures cohesive, high-impact coverage across platforms. The Weekend Director leads the editorial direction of weekend coverage, acting as the key decision-maker during off-peak executive hours.
Responsibilities & Duties
+ Lead and manage all domestic newsgathering operations during weekend hours, ensuring editorial excellence and accuracy.
+ Serve as the senior editorial authority during weekends, making critical decisions on story selection, deployment, and coverage strategy.
+ Direct breaking news coverage in real-time, coordinating closely with assignment desks, field teams, and bureaus.
+ Collaborate with weekend programming director and show teams, digital platforms, and senior producers to align content and ensure consistency across all platforms.
+ Monitor developments across news wires, internal reports, and social media to identify and escalate key stories.
+ Oversee the deployment of field teams and technical resources for field coverage, often on short notice.
+ Communicate regularly with weekday leadership to ensure editorial continuity and handoff of ongoing stories.
+ Enforce editorial standards, newsroom policies, and ethical guidelines
Qualifications & Skills
+ 7+ years of experience in a newsroom setting, including leadership roles in newsgathering or breaking news environments.
+ Proven track record of editorial decision-making under pressure in a fast-paced, 24/7 news cycle.
+ Strong leadership, communication, and team coordination skills.
+ Deep understanding of national news, field operations, and the demands of live coverage across multiple platforms.
+ Ability to manage competing priorities and make informed, timely decisions.
+ Experience working with broadcast, digital, and social media platforms.
+ Willingness and availability to work weekends and non-traditional hours, including holidays.
+ Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field (or equivalent experience).
Preferred Qualities
+ Possess a strong understanding of U.S. politics and political coverage strategies
+ Experience coordinating from the field during major breaking news events across time zones and platforms.

Salary range: $135,000 - $190,000
