    Job Description

    ESY - ASL/English Interpreter CFC (Summer 2025)

     

    **THIS IS A SUMMER STIPEND OPPORTUNITY** Hours are based on interpreting needs, which are subject to change.

    Program Description:

    The Extended School Year (ESY) program is a Special Education initiative designed for students with disabilities whose Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams have determined that continued services are necessary to prevent significant regression and to reduce the time needed to recoup lost skills. Services provided during ESY are tailored to each student’s IEP goals and objectives.

    Position Commitment:

    By accepting a position with the ESY program, you are committing to the full duration of the summer session. Staff are expected to be available for on-site work at the Horace Mann School for the Deaf in Charlestown, as well as for all scheduled field trips. Please note that work hours will be determined based on interpreting needs, which may vary and are subject to change.

    Reporting Structure:

    This position reports to the ESY Site Coordinator , who collaborates closely with the Director of Extended School Year and Expanded Learning (Office of Special Education) and the Director of Transition .

    Program Schedule:

    + Hours for Related Services Providers requiring interpreting services are tentatively Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 am to 1 pm each day, for 6 weeks from July 8 to August 7, 2025.

    + Hours for school field trips are Fridays from 8-2p.

    + All hours are subject to change based on program needs.

    + The Interpreter is expected to work all days they are assigned.

    + Any hours or days that are canceled with at least 48 hour notice will not be paid.

    Responsibilities and Expectations:

    + Work all assigned days and hours for the duration of the ESY program.

    + Provide communication facilitation for Related Service Providers and students.

    + Support communication between the ESY Program Director, staff, and nurse as needed.

     

    Assist with arrival and dismissal procedures, as directed by the Site Coordinator.

     

    + Perform other duties as assigned by the ESY Special Education Teacher or ESY Site Coordinator.

    + Adhere to the ESY Handbook and ensure compliance with policies across the site.

    + By accepting this position, the employee agrees to use the electronic sign-in system on site, which is maintained by BPS solely for audit and payroll verification purposes.

    + Failure to report to work on a given day of instructional time will result in a loss of pay for that day.

    + Job offers are conditional and based on sufficient student enrollment/attendance.

    Terms:

    + The individual who is hired for this position agrees to the 2025 BPS Summer Employment Terms.

    + This position is paid at $52 per hour.

    + Additional work hours that exceed the assigned hours in a day will require approval from the Director of Extended School Year and Expanded Learning.

    Qualifications Required:

    + Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience with American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting/transliterating in an educational setting

    + High school diploma or trade school certificate preferred

    + Possesses current Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (MCDHH) screening, or actively working toward completion

    + EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) 3.5 or higher.

    + Forty-eight (48) Credit Hours of College Coursework or an Associate's Degree, or a passing score on one of the two following Formalized Standardized Assessments: ParaPro Assessment (http://www.ets.org/parapro/) or WorkKeys Certificate of Proficiency for Teacher Assistants (http://www.act.org/workkeys/profcert/index.html).

    + Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

    + Current authorization to work in the United States. Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.

    Qualifications Preferred:

    + Graduate of an Interpreter Training Program

    + RID/NAD (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, National Association of the Deaf) certification

    + Bachelor’s Degree

    + BPS values linguistic diversity and believes that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity. BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, & Somali.
