    COLLEGE AND CAREER COUNSELOR (9-12) JOB DESCRIPTION Position Overview: Under the supervision of the School Principal, the College and Career Counselor provides guidance to students in creating and implementing postsecondary plans. They work with students to identify interests and strengths, develop career plans, choose elective courses and extracurriculars that will support these plans, and apply for college or enter the workforce. The College and Career Counselor is ultimately responsible for ensuring that all students make choices about their post-secondary plans that are well informed and not choices they are forced into because of a lack of other options.

    Key Responsibilities:

    + Guide students in making decisions about post-graduate endeavors including careers and career, such as choosing an occupation and the type of degree to pursue.

    + Support each student in identifying their strengths and interests and in developing a postsecondary career plan

    + Help students select and apply for educational programs that will further their career plan

    + Organize college fairs and visits

    + Meet with students in individual settings, small groups and large groups

    + Teach students job-search skills, such as interviewing and networking

    + Design and implement workshops for families on college readiness, college process, and financial aid among other topics

    + Maintain positive relationships with students and their families

    Professional Responsibilities:

    + Uphold the FLACS mission, core beliefs, and educational philosophy.

    + Reflect on their practice and is a lifelong learner who strives to improve effectiveness and guide professional growth.

    + Engage and collaborate with colleagues and the community to develop and sustain a common culture that supports high expectations for student learning.

    + Display evidence of self-motivation and willingness to be a team player.

    Qualifications:

    + Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred

    + Prior satisfactory counseling or teaching experience preferred

    + New York State Certification in School Counseling

    + NYS Department of Education fingerprint clearance
