This is a Transportation Worker II position and is in theDivision 2 Lenoir County Maintenance Unit. Workers will be required to traverse steep and uneven terrain, work in extreme temperature conditions, perform manual labor road maintenance duties, and other assigned duties. Workers in this position will be required to act upon both verbal and written communication to successfully complete assigned tasks. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, performing preventive maintenance and repairs to pavements, shoulder maintenance, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inventorying and tracking quantities used of materials, performing manual labor tasks and the operation of assigned heavy equipment. Work will require lifting up to 80 lbs. repeatedly. Work requires walking and standing for long periods of time, shoveling, raking, and sweeping. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions.This position is subject to emergency call back work, night work and out of town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

+ Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures
+ Knowledge of Work Zone Safety & NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices
+ Experience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device)
+ Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching.
+ Experience performing snow and ice removal operations.
Additional Expectations:
A valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement is required for this position. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Work involves visual acuity, bending, walking and standing on uneven terrain, and the ability to safely and repeatedly lift and carry up to 80 lbs. Safety toe footwear is needed.
This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age.

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
