Communications Specialist
Position Summary
At Stony Brook Medicine, the Office of Marketing and Communications seeks a dynamic and detail-oriented Communications Specialist to support communications across the enterprise, emphasizing internal communications. This includes Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital, and ambulatory and practice locations throughout Suffolk County. Reporting to the Senior Director of Internal and Executive Communications, this role will collaborate across teams to execute communication strategies that engage employees, enhance transparency, and elevate the institution’s reputation.
The ideal candidate will be a strong writer, highly organized, and an excellent project manager, with the ability to support a range of communications initiatives, including internal communications, employee engagement, corporate awards submissions, enterprise-wide storytelling, and the adoption and expansion of digital communication tools such as intranets and employee portals. Additionally, this role will apply SEO content best practices to optimize internal news and announcements, ensuring content is discoverable and engaging for internal audiences while also being accessible and relevant for external use when appropriate.
Duties of a Communications Specialist may include the following but are not limited to:
* Develop and execute internal and general communication strategies that inform, engage and inspire employees across all levels of the organization.
* Write and curate content for internal newsletters, email campaigns, intranet updates, digital bulletin boards and other communication platforms.
* Assist in developing and promoting organizational initiatives, campaigns, and key announcements that align with Stony Brook Medicine’s mission, vision and iCARE values.
* Partner with Human Resources and employee engagement teams on initiatives related to culture, policy updates and internal programs.
* Provide logistical and communications support for enterprise-wide events like town halls, including content development and multimedia coordination.
* Collaborate with departments across the enterprise to identify and highlight employee success stories, key initiatives and organizational achievements. Attend events as needed to ensure coverage in internal newsletters.
* Assist with corporate award submissions, including tracking deadlines and coordinating nominations for local and regional programs to highlight institutional excellence and support external relations.
* Support the expansion and optimization of digital communication platforms, including intranets, employee portals, and internal communication technologies to improve accessibility and engagement.
* Monitor and analyze communication metrics to assess impact and optimize engagement.
* Ensure brand consistency and alignment across all internal and external messaging.
* Assist with additional marketing and communications projects as needed, contributing to broader storytelling and outreach efforts.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
+ Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, Writing, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field; Bachelor’s degree in unrelated field acceptable with 5 years of experience in Marketing or Communications.
+ 3-5 years’ experience in corporate or internal communications.
+ Proven ability to collaborate with internal stakeholders and on communication strategies and initiatives.
+ Exceptional writing, editing and proofreading skills.
+ Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
+ High level of interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and collaborate across all levels of the organization,
Preferred Qualifications:
+ 5 years of experience in corporate or employee communications, internal communications, or related roles, preferably within healthcare, academia or a large organization.
+ Experience in healthcare communications or with an academic medical center.
+ Experience managing large-scale internal events, such as town halls, including content creation and coordination.
+ Knowledge of graphic design or multimedia production is a plus
+ Familiarity with digital tools, including project management platforms like Monday.com or Wrike

+ Stony Brook Medicine is a smoke free environment. Smoking is strictly prohibited anywhere on campus, including parking lots and outdoor areas on the premises.

Anticipated Pay Range:
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position is - $74909 - $93636 / year.
The above salary range represents SBUH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate’s validated years of comparable experience. Any efforts to inflate or misrepresent experience are grounds for disqualification from the application process or termination of employment if hired.
