Responsibilities
As a **Lead Heavy Equipment Mechanic** , you will be responsible for overseeing and supervising the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment within our terminal operations. This includes diagnosing and repairing heavy-duty lift equipment in the railyard and maintaining side loaders, hostlers, forklifts, and various terminal support vehicles. In this leadership role, you will guide a team of mechanics, ensuring optimal equipment performance, safety, and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
+ Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of the maintenance team.
+ Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair heavy-duty lift equipment, including side loaders (loaded container handlers), hostlers (yard trucks), and forklifts.
+ Prioritize work orders and maintenance schedules in coordination with the Terminal and Regional Maintenance Managers.
+ Provide hands-on mechanical support and serve as the subject matter expert for complex maintenance issues.
+ Train, mentor, and lead team members, promoting best practices in repair techniques and safety protocols.
+ Manage parts inventory and vendor relationships for approved equipment purchases.
+ Complete and maintain accurate documentation for inspections, repairs, and compliance with safety standards.
Qualifications
+ 3–5 years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic or service technician.
+ Previous crane mechanic experience a plus
+ Proven experience in heavy equipment maintenance and repair, particularly with side loaders, forklifts, and hostlers.
+ Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and guide a team of mechanics.
+ Hydraulic systems experience required (pumps, valves, motors, filters, and hoses)
+ Driveline component repair experience (axles, bearings, ring, etc.)
+ Ability to work in various weather conditions
+ Ability to work in a safety focused environment
+ Strong communication skills
+ Strong leadership skills and the ability to manage and motivate a team.
+ Ability to lift 50lbs
+ Must have a Valid Driver’s License
+ Must pass a pre-employment background verification, physical and drug screening.
+ The Federal Rail Administration sets and enforces safety regulations and standards for railroad operations. Use of cannabis is strictly prohibited. If applicable for the position you are applying to, and if you are offered the position, you will have to take and pass a drug screen.
+ Must be able to work 7:00AM-3:30PM Monday-Friday
Preferred Qualifications
+ Previous experience as a crane mechanic.
+ Experience working in railyard or intermodal terminal environments.
+ Familiarity with federal safety regulations related to rail and heavy equipment.
