Position Description
The Fire Inspector 1 position assists with performing fire prevention inspections to ensure compliance with applicable fire safety laws. Performs related duties as required.
*This position requires on-call availability and the ability to respond to work needs on short notice, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary.*
Typical Duties
+ Assists with fire prevention inspections.
+ Inspects organizations and residential establishments to determine compliance with Fire Code Laws and Ordinances.
+ Enforces Fire Code Laws and Ordinances.
+ Inspects fire extinguishing and fire protection equipment to ensure they are operable.
+ Performs administrative duties.
+ Establishes and maintains records.
+ Prepares reports listing repairs and replacements as needed.
+ Plans and conducts public education programs and acquaints the public with fire prevention and safety methods, fire laws and regulations.
+ Works with the public to minimize safety hazards.
+ Attends training as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent and two (2) years experience in fire fighting, fire prevention, arson investigation, building codes enforcement, or related emergency experience.

Associate's Degree in Fire Science or related field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the requirement listed above.

LICENSES REQUIRED
State of Tennessee Fire Inspector Certification within one (1) year of appointment
Valid Driver License
Failure to obtain the first certification within a one (1) year period shall result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.
NOTE ON TRANSITIONING TO PROFESSIONAL LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION CLASSIFICATION:
Employees in this classification shall be automatically upgraded to the next level in this classification series provided all of the criteria of Policy 5.6 B-III, Transitioning to Professional License or Certification Classification are met.
Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

+ Knowledge of fire prevention and safety principles and practices.
+ Knowledge of state and local laws and regulations governing fire prevention and suppression.
+ Knowledge of building and fire codes.
+ Experience determining compliance with Fire Code Laws and Ordinances.
+ Knowledge of equipment and materials used in fire prevention.
+ Knowledge of fire permit requirements.
+ Ability to perform thorough inspections.
+ Ability to conduct fire safety and prevention educational programs.
+ Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
