    This position will begin July 21, 2025

    JOB DESCRIPTION

    The Secondary School Counseling Specialist coordinates all aspects of the district’s Comprehensive School Counseling Program for middle and high schools. This role provides leadership and support to students, families, school counselors, principals, and CTE coordinators in all areas of secondary counseling, including academic advising, college and career readiness, and social-emotional development.

     

    Under the direction of the Director of Student Wellness Services, the Specialist will assist with budget oversight, credit and graduation guidelines, NCAA eligibility compliance, development of the district course catalog, training of secondary school counselors, preparation of informational materials, organization of college and career events, and assist the district MTSS leadership team with the development and implementation of postsecondary pathways.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    + Coordinate implementation of the USBE Secondary School Counseling Program and related procedures.

    + Assist in developing and managing school counseling budgets, including oversight of the State Comprehensive Guidance Program budget.

    + Lead the creation and revision of publications and informational resources related to secondary counseling for students, families, and staff.

    + Represent the district at relevant USBE, Wasatch Front, and statewide counseling meetings, conferences, and committees.

    + Assist with preparation for school site reviews and maintain all required documentation.

    + Co-chair the District Course Catalog Committee.

    + Research, model, and promote current best practices in secondary school counseling.

    + Design and implement a mentoring program for new and experienced secondary school counselors.

    + Prepare and submit required district and USBE reports related to college and career readiness and school counseling services.

    + Collaborate with school and district administrators to resolve credit, scheduling, and course-related issues.

    + In coordination with district leadership, support efforts to meet and maintain the USBE-recommended counselor-to-student ratio of 1:350.

    + Build and maintain relationships with Utah colleges and universities, including departments of admissions, financial aid, academics, and athletics.

    + Organize and oversee college and career readiness events, such as college recruiting fairs, student campus visits, FAFSA nights, and scholarship workshops.

    + Coordinate Utah College Application Week (UCAW) activities in secondary schools.

    + Provide training and support on NCAA eligibility requirements for student-athletes, parents, and staff.

    + Promote completion of in-state scholarship programs and encourage postsecondary planning across secondary schools.

    + Develop recognition and incentive programs for exemplary secondary school counselors.

    + Collaborate with the Office of Instructional Supports and Institutional Research to analyze student data related to course-taking patterns, ACT performance, and postsecondary readiness.

    + Plan and facilitate professional learning, PLCs, and training for secondary counseling staff.

    + Support refinement, implementation, and training of Thrive Time (grades 6-8)

    + Serve as the primary contact for staff and parent inquiries related to district school counseling policies and practices.

    + Participate in professional development and attend relevant conferences as assigned.

    + Support hiring processes by participating in screening and interviews for school counselor candidates.

    + Partner with the Office of Public Communications to maintain accurate and up-to-date information on school and district websites related to school counseling, postsecondary planning, and Utah higher education institutions.

    + Assist in leading the district crisis response team and support school-level crisis response efforts.

    + Maintain predictable and reliable attendance.

    + Perform other duties as assigned.

     

    During times of state or district emergency, all employees may be required to perform additional duties that are not required on a normal basis in support of educational and operational priorities. e.g., Performs general cleaning and sanitizing of work areas, provides remote assistance to students and staff, and any other reasonable duty as needed.

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

    + Incumbent must be fingerprinted and clear a criminal backgrounds check.

    + Master’s degree in School Counseling or related field (Education Administration, Student Services, etc.) required.

    + Requires minimum of five years of experience as a secondary school counselor in a private or public K-12 setting, or comparable job experience with demonstrated competence.

    + Substantial knowledge of, and experience working with, federal and state policies related to postsecondary preparation and access.

    + Experience working at, or with, admissions, financial aid, and athletics departments at institutions of higher education strongly preferred.

    + Substantial knowledge of current research and best practices related to high school academic rigor and relevance.

    + Substantial knowledge of current Utah laws and policies related to postsecondary preparation and access, including Utah based legislative funded scholarship opportunities.

    + Experience with Secondary School Counseling, PCCR’s, concurrent enrollment, college counseling, and career counseling.

    + Requires outstanding interpersonal skills, impeccable integrity, the ability to work well with a variety of stakeholders and patrons, ability to work in a team environment, and unrelenting focus on customer service. Interacts with principals and teachers, parents, senior district office staff, general public, board of education, institutions of higher education, Utah State Board of Education, and business leaders.

    + Must possess great sense of humor, outstanding flexibility, ability to work in a fast-paced, innovative environment, and skilled at coordinating tasks and assignments with high-level, well-educated, opinionated, outgoing personalities.

    + Must possess high degree of patience, dignity, and sensitivity. Attention to detail is imperative.

    + Must have advanced written and verbal communication skills.

    + Excellent computer skills with Microsoft Word applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Docs, Canva, Skyward (Qmlativ), Data Dashboard and other digital publishing applications required.

    + Standard office machines and equipment.

    + Demonstrated leadership, coaching, facilitating, and team-building skills.

    + Accuracy and confidentiality are critically important.

    + Must have outstanding organization and initiative, and a professional, courteous demeanor suitable for working at the executive level.
