    This position will begin on July 21, 2025

    JOB DESCRIPTION

    The Elementary School Counseling Specialist coordinates all district elementary counseling and wellness programs. This role provides leadership and support to students, families, elementary school-based wellness personnel (including licensed school counselors and licensed school social workers), behavioral/MTSS aides, and administrators across all areas of Tier I prevention, elementary school counseling, and student wellness. Under the direction of the Director of Student Wellness Services, the Specialist assists with budget oversight, leads implementation of Thrive Time (CSD’s life skills curriculum), coordinates professional learning for staff, provides mentoring and coaching for wellness personnel, supports the CTESS evaluation process, prepares informational resources for families and schools, and contributes to the development and implementation of the district’s MTSS framework.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    + Provide leadership, coaching, and professional support for elementary wellness personnel, including licensed school counselors, licensed school social workers, and behavioral/MTSS aides.

    + Under the direction of the Director of Student Wellness Services, assists in the development and maintenance of elementary school counseling budgets, and any mandatory state reporting required.

    + Assist in the creation and revision of informational materials and publications related to elementary wellness for families, students, and staff.

    + Represent the district in regional and state-level school counseling and wellness meetings, including USBE and Wasatch Front events.

    + Assist with preparation and participation in school counseling audits and state reviews; maintain site review documentation.

    + Support the Course Catalog Committee to support vertical alignment with academic pathways as students transition to the secondary level.

    + Stay current on and share best practices in school-based wellness and elementary counseling.

    + Develop and implement a district-wide mentoring program for new elementary wellness personnel.

    + Establish clear job expectations for each wellness role at the elementary level (licensed school counselor, licensed school social worker, and behavioral/MTSS aide).

    + Provide direct support to Student Support Teams (SST’s) at the elementary level, creating system-wide consistency in SST processes and outcomes and training on evidence-based best practices for student outcomes.

    + Prepare USBE and district reports related to elementary counseling and MTSS implementation when needed.

    + Collaborate with District and School leaders to support and resolve issues involving elementary wellness personnel.

    + Foster positive working relationships with district departments and school administrators in support of student wellness initiatives.

    + Develop and facilitate parent education events focused on elementary-specific wellness topics.

    + Provide cross-coverage for the Secondary School Counseling Specialist when necessary.

    + Design recognition and incentive programs to honor outstanding contributions of wellness personnel.

    + Partner with the Office of Instructional Supports, Institutional Research, and the district MTSS leadership team to collect and analyze student data related to academic, behavioral, and emotional outcomes.

    + Plan and lead professional development, training, and provide PLC opportunities for elementary wellness teams.

    + Serve as the primary district contact for inquiries related to elementary school counseling and wellness practices.

    + Participate in professional learning opportunities and conferences as assigned.

    + Support hiring processes for elementary school counselors and social workers by participating in candidate screening and interviews.

    + Collaborate with the Office of Public Communications to ensure accurate wellness-related content is maintained on district and school websites.

    + Assist with coordinating and leading the district crisis response team and leading the elementary-level crisis response.

    + Maintain predictable and reliable attendance.

    + Perform other duties as assigned.

     

    During times of state or district emergency, all employees may be required to perform additional duties that are not required on a normal basis in support of educational and operational priorities. e.g. Performs general cleaning and sanitizing of work areas, provides remote assistance to students and staff, and any other reasonable duty as needed.

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

    + Incumbent must be fingerprinted and clear a criminal backgrounds check.

    + Master’s degree in School Counseling or related field.

    + Requires minimum of five years of experience as an elementary school counselor in a private or public K-12 setting, or comparable job experience with demonstrated competence.

    + Substantial knowledge of, and experience working at the elementary level with students with a strategic focus on student wellness.

    + Substantial knowledge of current research and best practices related to elementary academic rigor, relevance and relationships.

    + Substantial knowledge of current Utah laws and policies related to elementary school counseling.

    + Experience with elementary school counseling, IEP’s, 504’s, BIP’s (Behavioral Intervention Plans), and FBA’s (Functional Behavioral Analysis), and elementary evidence-based social, emotional, and cognitive screeners.

    + Requires outstanding interpersonal skills, impeccable integrity, the ability to work well with a variety of stakeholders and patrons, ability to work in a team environment, and unrelenting focus on customer service. Interacts with principals and teachers, parents, senior district office staff, general public, board of education, institutions of education, Utah State Board of Education, policy makers, and business leaders.

    + Must possess great sense of humor, outstanding flexibility, ability to work in a fast-paced, innovative environment, and skilled at coordinating tasks and assignments with high-level, well-educated, opinionated, outgoing personalities.

    + Must possess high degree of patience, dignity, and sensitivity. Attention to detail is imperative.

    + Must have advanced written and verbal communication skills.

    + Excellent computer skills with Microsoft Word applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), Google Docs, Canva, Skyward (Qmlativ), Data Dashboard and other digital publishing applications.

    + Standard office machines and equipment.

    + Demonstrated leadership, coaching, facilitating, and team-building skills.

    + Accuracy and confidentiality are critically important.

    + Must have outstanding organization and initiative, and a professional, courteous demeanor suitable for working at the executive level.
