    Custom Job Purpose:

    This position exists to perform skilled work in installing, maintaining and repairing boilers and boiler auxiliaries.

     

    Essential Functions of this Job

     

    Maintains and repairs boilers and boiler auxiliaries, using hand tools and portable power tools. Cleans boilers and boiler furnaces. Inspects and repairs boiler fittings, such as safety valves, regulators, automatic control mechanisms, and water columns and auxiliary machines such as pumps, draft fans, and burners. Repairs or replaces piping, unit ventilators, radiators, convection units and air vents. Installs boilers and storage tanks. Installs and repairs insulation on boilers, storage tanks and piping. Repairs gas heaters. The ability to operate and communicate on a two-way radio. Uses and ensures proper maintenance and storage of tools and equipment. Keeps daily records and logs of work.

     

    Must be able to perform physical tasks as set forth in the Physical Environment section of this document.

     

    Non-Essential Functions of this Job

     

    Performs other duties as assigned.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Three years of full-time practical experience as a boiler mechanic under a licensed boiler contractor is preferred. Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools of boiler repair and maintenance. Ability to interpret and work from general instructions, building specifications, blueprints and sketches. Ability to maintain records of time and of labor and material costs. Skill in the use and care of the tools, materials and equipment of the craft. Bilingual/biliterate preferred.

     

    Education, Experience and/or Certification/License Requirements

     

    Graduation from high school, completion of GED, or trade school. Must have a valid driver's license appropriate to the vehicles assigned to the trade and be qualified to drive a School Board Vehicle.

    Work Context:

    Requires standing, walking and moving about to coordinate work. Requires face-to-face discussions and contact with individuals and/or teams. Requires coordination of work tasks to establish priorities, set goals and meet deadlines. Requires work with both internal and external contacts, and with the public. Requires the use of alternative communication systems such as electronic mail, telephones, two way radios and computers.

    Physical Environment:

    Requires standing for the majority of the day, and the ability to frequently lift, carry, move and/or position objects weighing between up to 50 pounds. May infrequently be required to lift more than 50 pounds with assistance as required. Requires working both indoors and outdoors. Requires the proper use of personal protective devices and equipment as assigned.
