The CMO Alaska serves as a member of the local Executive Team and participates in the design and development of the organization's strategic plan and vision. Works closely with the CAO in a physician/administrator dyad formation to lead quality, patient safety and patient experience of care in the community, collaborates with key stakeholders to ensure the facility stays compliant with regulatory requirements. Serves as a physician who represents clinical practices for the executive team. Works closely with medical staff leadership/committees, PHMG executives and providers to ensure alignment with strategic initiatives. Responsible for the integration of clinical quality and demonstrated best clinical practices into medical staff operations, evaluates the development of new and continuation of existing services, investigating future clinical technologies/information systems and evaluating their impact on providers' practices, patient safety and patient family experience. Creates a patient-centered environment that is highly satisfying to providers and caregivers. Responsible for managing medical community and interdepartmental relations, coaching/mentoring physician leaders and managing teams to improve team leadership effectiveness. Responsible for developing provider relationships and clinical integration activity across PeaceHealth. Works closely with provider recruitment and onboarding. Participates in and is a member of the system Physician Executive Council. Chief Medical Officer (CMO) have the authority and responsibility to oversee patient care services provided on their hospital and to ensure adherence to quality and regulatory requirements in collaboration with the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO). The CMO Alaska must ensure that quality and performance improvement activities meet their target conditions. The CMO Alaska is responsible to adhere to all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards for their areas and to be continuously ready for any survey on those regulations or standards.

The CMO position is a 0.8 FTE administrative role, with the expectation that the individual in this position will also maintain a 0.2 FTE clinical practice.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Leads clinical quality improvement, patient safety and regulatory and accreditation projects/concerns within assigned communities.

2. In conjunction with system colleagues, Community Executive Team and Leadership Council; ensures established medical practices express PeaceHealth mission, vision and organizational standards.

3. Participates in the planning, organization, and administration of general and medical policies and procedures in the hospital and PHMG by membership in a variety of committees.

4. In collaboration with other community leaders, assists as needed to remove barriers to coming into compliance with regulatory requirements and supports a system wide approach. Assists with preventative and corrective action planning when medical provider support is needed.

5. In support of quality lead, co-chairs the Quality Management Committee – supporting development of the quality plan for the community, actively recruiting medical staff engagement and prioritizing work with other executives. Collaborates with local and system quality committees to ensure alignment. Serves as a liaison between senior leadership and the medical staff.

6. Engages in patient safety support and initiatives, root cause analysis as appropriate, and assuring credible action plans are resourced and completed. Participates in system patient safety committees to share best practices and ensure follow up in local community. Serves as AOC.

7. Assures clinical quality and practices are aligned with fiscal responsibility. Is accountable as a member of the community executive team for achievement of the community’s financial targets related to quality, safety, and clinical practice.

8. Supports the development of protocols for high risk and/or high-volume disease processes to eliminate unnecessary variation and foster standardized approaches.

9. Participates in annual strategic and operational planning for the community in conjunction with annual strategic and operational planning for PH system. Advocates for providers and clinical practices at all levels of the community. Partners with CAO for City Council communications.

10. Provides mentoring, performance reviews and oversight to appointed/employed service line medical directors. Partners with staff to elected medical staff officers in their strategies and assignments. In collaboration with the director of operations and / or clinic manager(s), assists in provider recruitment, orientation and retention programs including determining provider staffing needs. Participates in the evaluation of the department’s director(s), managers and Department Leaders.

11. Monitors, and consistently works to achieve a high level of physician and advanced practice clinician morale. Addresses issues which could be potentially detrimental to the proper functioning of the clinic, division and PeaceHealth Medical Group.

12. Leads, supports and participates in resolving provider personnel issues. The CMO has the authority, in conjunction with the Physician VP, to direct and manage providers and staff within the clinical departments according to approved organizational plans and policies.

13. Functions as the Patient Safety Officer for assigned area by communicating regularly with the board and senior leadership team and by leading the integrated patient safety program.

14. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

+ Accredited School of Medicine required and completion of an accredited residency program in a medical or clinical specialty.

+ Master's Degree preferred in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration. or secondary college education in a business or health administration field.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

+ Minimum of 5 years of Clinical practice experience.

+ Experience leading/partnering in multidisciplinary teams.

+ Successful experience with redesign or process work which includes community wide implementation.

+ Minimum of 5 years high-level healthcare leadership experience. (Preferred)

CREDENTIALS

+ Required upon hire: Medical Doctor - Alaska

REQUIRED SKILLS

+ Up-to-date knowledge of changes in healthcare, emerging clinical methodologies and standards.

+ Possesses excellent problem-solving skills.

The salary range for this job opening at PeaceHealth is (.8 FTE) **$232,704 – $296,568** . The hiring rate is dependent upon several factors, including but not limited to education, training, work experience, seniority, etc.
