    THE POSITION

    Under general supervision (Occupational Therapist) or direction (Sr. Occupational Therapist), evaluates, plans, coordinates, and administers occupational therapy services to maximize independence in activities of daily living for clients from birth to age 21 enrolled in the California Children’s Services Medical Therapy Program.

    THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

    We are seeking an exceptional therapist with pediatric experience to join our team.

     

    The ideal candidate will have knowledge of effective, up-to-date occupational therapy treatment and evaluation practices for the pediatric population. This will include the understanding of sensory, social, and physical development of children and the unique differences and needs of clients living with long-term medical conditions such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, and various neuromuscular and musculoskeletal diagnoses. They will have a working knowledge of evaluating and recommending durable medical equipment (DME) and the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process. Experience or active pursuit of Advanced Practice in Complex Feeding and Swallowing through the California Board of Occupational Therapy is highly preferred.

     

    At the Senior level, candidates are expected to demonstrate clinical leadership by supervising staff and students, supporting departmental initiatives, participating in training efforts, and collaborating with agencies and support personnel to ensure coordinated, comprehensive care.

     

    AGENCY/DEPARTMENT: Health Care Agency, Public Health - Conejo Valley Medical Therapy Unit.

    PAYROLL TITLES AND APPROXIMATE SALARIES

    Occupational Therapist: $3,094.08 - $4,326.23 b iweekly

     

    Senior Occupational Therapist: $3,364.01 - $4,954.68 b iweekly

     

    Occupational Therapist and Senior Occupational Therapist are represented by the Services Employees International Union (SEIU) and are eligible for overtime compensation.

     

    The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra-help vacancies for this position only. There is currently one (1) Regular vacancy within the Health Care Agency, Public Health.

     

    NOTE: If appointed at the lower level, the incumbent may be promoted to the higher level without further examination upon meeting the minimum requirements, demonstrating satisfactory performance, and in accordance with the business needs of the department.

     

    Examples Of Duties

    Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

    + Provides occupational therapy services in accordance with the California Business and Professions Code, Occupational Therapy Practice Act, and consistent with the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) Standards of Practice for Occupational Therapy.

    + Evaluates, assesses, plans, develops, and utilizes occupational therapy programs to meet the functional needs of clients.

    + Participates in the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process as a representative of the Medical Therapy Program.

    + Sets functional goals for therapy in coordination with the prescribing physician, client, family, and/or caregiver.

    + Actively engages clients and caregivers in the implementation of the therapy plan and home activity/exercise programs.

    + Provides client, family, and/or caregiver education to assist in the achievement of functional goals.

    + Maintains current and appropriate documentation of client’s status and progress towards goals.

    + Coordinates occupational therapy programs with clients, families, caregivers, and other team members/agencies involved in the care of assigned clients.

    + Applies, modifies, and fabricates, as needed, specific static and dynamic splints and adaptive equipment to improve functional outcomes.

    + Supervises assistants, aides, volunteers, and clerical staff in the absence of the supervisor; may clinically supervise Occupational Therapists. (Senior)

    + Participates in the maintenance of equipment and ordering of adaptive equipment/supplies.

    + Clinically supervises Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs)/therapy aides, students, and volunteers.

    + Participates in improving organizational performance.

    + Assists in the educational process of students and new employees.

    + Performs other related duties as required.

    At the Senior level, duties may also include, but are not limited to, the following:

    + Participates in in-service training.

    + May clinically supervise staff therapists.

    + Assists in identifying and prioritizing department needs and overall planning.

    + Under supervision, develops and implements department programs.

    Typical Qualifications

    These are entrance requirements to the exam process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

    EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:

    Occupational Therapist:

    + A bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of occupational therapy or proof of equivalency.

    Senior Occupational Therapist:

    + A bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of occupational therapy or proof of equivalency, AND

    + Two (2) years of experience as an occupational therapist OR successful completion of an internship program with the hiring department or an equivalent training program and one (1) year of experience as an occupational therapist.

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

    + Must possess a current, valid California Occupational Therapist license and maintain it as a condition of continued employment.

    + Must obtain a certificate from the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy within the probationary period.

    + Possession of a valid California driver's license and proof of auto insurance may be required.

    + Possession of a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certificate by date of hire. Once obtained, it is a condition of continued employment.

    + Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.

    DESIRED:

    + Pediatric experience.

    + Experience working with complex physiological and neurological medical conditions.

    + Experience evaluating and recommending durable medical equipment.

    + Working knowledge of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

    + Possession of or willingness to pursue Advanced Practice in Complex Feeding and Swallowing through the California Board of Occupational Therapy.
