    Saint-Gobain Research North America is seeking a driven, talented, and energetic Research Engineer II to join our Processes Technology Group focused on Wet Coatings. This position will support different Business Units (BUs) across Saint Gobain North America (SGR NA) to develop new products & technologies, scale-up, operate pilot coating equipment, improve processes, and support current manufacturing operations.

    Key responsibilities will include:

    + Designing and developing new formulations for various products, ensuring they meet specific performance and regulatory standards.

    + Identifying and troubleshoot formulation-related issues during product development and production.

    + Conducting scale-up trials to evaluate the feasibility of transitioning formulations from the lab to production.

    + Modifying existing formulations to improve product performance, stability, and cost-effectiveness.

    + Planning and conducting experiments to evaluate the properties and performance of formulations.

    + Utilizing statistical tools and Design of Experiments (DOE) to analyze data and draw meaningful conclusions.

    + Working closely with cross-functional teams, including R&D, manufacturing, purchasing, product stewardship and marketing, to ensure successful product development and launch.

    + Conducting and troubleshooting pilot wet coating trials and analyze the experimental outcomes.

    + Seeking out others to enhance and streamline development and decision making.

    + Understanding Gate Process methodology/ideology and utilizing and incorporating it in research projects

    Essential Functions

    + Continuously and reliably carry projects through to completion with little assistance from supervisor. Projects involve the extension of present or new technology in one or more areas, involving improvement and/or development of formulations or products, processes, techniques, characterization and fundamental knowledge.

    + Provides technical assistance to support projects led by others in the competency research lab or various Saint-Gobain businesses. Participates in technical meetings with internal customers (oral presentations / written reports).

    + Visits Saint-Gobain manufacturing locations to transition projects to manufacturing and / or to consult with the plants on how to optimize their operations.

    + Manages and documents projects effectively under minimal supervision by a technical leader or direct manager.

    Competencies

    + Demonstrated project management skills, team collaboration, and oral, written and visual communication skills.

    + Ability to network/communicate within and out of group, as well as across disciplines.

    + Demonstrated aptitude to quickly understand new concepts and technology and apply them.

    Required Qualifications

    BS Degree with a minimum of 3+ years’ experience or entry level for MS degree with a thesis in Material Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or other related disciplines.

     

    + 3+ years of industrial experience in industrial formulation development, scale-up and coating technologies required.

    + Knowledge of formulation development & optimization, wet coating, scale-up required.

    + Experience operating pilot wet coating equipment and knowledge of wet coating methodologies (e.g., roll to roll, Meyer rod, slot die etc.) preferred.

    + Experience transitioning new processes and products to manufacturing required.

    + Must possess a body of technical work commensurate with their years of experience including but not limited to: demonstration of hands-on new product and process development, formulation, wet coating, data analysis, and drawing conclusions based on a collection of basic data and interpretation, Patents, and technical documents.

    + Knowledge of rheology, mixing, physico-chemistry and analytical characterization preferred.

    + Knowledge and ability to carry out Design of Experiment (DOE) preferred.
