    Job Summary

    The System Physician Executive (SPE) will provide administrative and clinical leadership for the Novant Health Hospital Based Medicine Institute and the system wide Hospital Based Medicine service line. The Hospital Based Medicine Institute serves as an integrated spectrum of specialists to include Hospital Medicine (Hospitalists), Infectious Disease, Tele-ICU, and Pulmonary care in inpatient and outpatient facilities. With a mission to drive high quality and seamless service, the Hospital Based Medicine Institute operates throughout all regions of Novant Health footprint . Each of these regions brings distinct programs tailored to the needs of their respective geographies. Care within the Institute is provided by over 250+ physicians and APPs in a mixed model of employment across 50+ outpatient locations and 19+ facilities. Hospital based medicine institute is the core to providing comprehensive care to hospitalized patients, encompassing clinical care, teaching, and leadership within our hospital and select outpatient settings.

    Responsibilities

    Diversity and Inclusion, Health Equity

     

    •Actively support and engage in behaviors and decision supporting diversity, inclusion, and supports clinical gap closures for all patients.

     

    Executive Leadership

     

    • Collaborate with all pertinent organizational leaders and manages interdependencies across divisions to design and provide patient care and services including development of patient care programs, establishment of standards of practice, standards of patient care, and policies and procedures.

    • Support the management and operations of Hospital Based Medicine services in Novant Health’s acute and ambulatory footprint across existing (GCM, GWSM, Coastal) and emerging geographies (Asheville, South Carolina, Triangle), in collaboration with the VP of Specialty Institutes and the executive leadership of Novant Health Enterprises.

     

    Clinical Performance/Quality Improvement/Patient Safety

     

    • Enthusiastically support and lead quality improvement initiatives. Set tone within the Hospital Based Medicine service line that Novant Health will be a leader in quality and will conduct itself to achieve the highest level of quality attainable.

     

    Quality and Service

     

    • Standardize services, processes, resources, and practices where appropriate to improve efficiency maximizing continuity of patient care while maintaining professional standards with disciplines and across the institute.

     

    Recruitment/Retention/Performance Management/Physician Compensation

     

    • Develop and revises organizational structures to meet functional needs; ensure communications, reporting, and incentives align people and processes.

    • Ensure that the appropriate leadership and resources are available and organized to focus on the recruitment, retention, development, competence, and growth of qualified people to provide superb clinical quality in patient care services.

     

    Vision, Growth and Program Strategy Planning

     

    • Develop and execute strategic plans for the Hospital Based Medicine Institute in alignment with Novant Health’s overall strategic goals, in collaboration with the SVP & President, Novant Health Specialty Institutes, and additional Novant Health stakeholders (e.g., Region leaders)

     

    Growth and Business Development

     

    • Support Novant Health’s physician expansion and ambulatory growth in core region, as well as new partnerships and entry into new geographies, in partnership with President of NH Specialty Institutes

    • Lead practice integrations and due diligence in conjunction with other Novant Health departments to support growth in existing (GCM, GWSM, Coastal) and emerging geographies (Asheville, South Carolina, Triangle).

     

    Operational Performance

     

    •Support the overall performance of the Hospital Based Medicine Institute across the system, including safety, quality, clinical practice, operational, and financial results for the Hospital Based Medicine Institute

     

    Finance

     

    • Oversee development of operating and capital budgets and ensures financial objectives are achieved. Presents, secures approval of budgets and achieves targets and goals.

     

    Physical and Technology Infrastructure

     

    • Actively develop programs and processes to connect and integrate the Hospital Based Medicine Institute with Novant Health at large and with healthcare industry and community activities.

     

    Communication

     

    • Ensure timely and consistent communication of all mandatory and strategic alignment messages to all staff and physicians in the Institute while modeling behavior that is consistent with Novant Health cause.

    Qualifications

    + Education: Medical Doctorate or Doctor of Osteopathy degree from a recognized college or university and Board certified in internal medicine with an exemplary clinical track record.

    + Experience : 10+ years growth and development of a multidisciplinary Hospital Based Medicine program required.

    + Licensure/Certification/Registration : Current medical license in North Carolina required.

    + Additional Skills/Requirements (required)

    • Background facilitating the development and refinement of Hospital Based Medicine Institute practices, serving as the primary physician leader to ensure cost effective, high quality, comprehensive care.

    • Leadership experience at a higher performing Hospital Based Medicine program as a director, chair, chief, service line leader or similar position.

    • Experience implementing quality and care management initiatives, clinical best practices, and process improvement initiatives to achieve the highest level of care. Strong understanding of health guidelines/best practices to include but limited to HEDIS, NCQA, HBIPS, SAMHSA, and CMS and the needs of other accrediting organizations.

    • Strong leadership skills with the ability to advance and develop a superior clinical service, with experience and comfort working in a matrixed organization.

    • Excellent interpersonal communication and presentation skills for both clinical and non-clinical audiences, in group settings or one-on-one.

    • Expertise in establishing physician relationships combined with the ability to manage an interdisciplinary team while appreciating and fostering collegial and peer participation from all disciplines.

    • Effective supervisory skills, including clinical mentoring and coaching expertise, and when necessary, comfort with progressive disciplinary actions and compliance.

    • Demonstrate commitment to education of the next generation of providers through mentoring and teaching students, residents, fellows, and peers

    • Advocate for organizational values and commitment to gender equity and diversity.

    • Personal characteristics of integrity, maturity, and honesty aligned with the mission, vision, and values of Novant Health.

    • Demonstrated experience with capital/operating budgets and an understanding of the challenges facing academic and community medicine.

    • Additional desired attributes include experience in board governance, physician governance, negotiation, conflict resolution, dashboard analysis, oral presentation and writing skills.

    • Strong negotiation skills with ability to lead through a high degree of influence.

    • Ability to make difficult decisions with input from others in a decisive manner.

    • A proven ability to provide visionary leadership in a complicated and complex matrixed
