    Part Time (24 Hours Biweekly)

     

    Shift: Day/Evening 7:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.

     

    Minimum work commitment is three weekend shifts in a 6-week schedule period

     

    Must work one major, and one minor Holiday per year

     

    The emergency department (ED) is a fast-paced environment where nursing staff care for patients of all ages with emergency medical complaints. The high volume GSH ED sees about 45,000 patients each year. Our highly trained staff are supported by a Director, Nurse Manager, Assistant Nurse Manager, Clinical Coordinators, Clinical Educator, and On-Boarding Specialists. The ED specific orientation is comprehensive to include care for high-risk patients, life threatening conditions and illnesses, as well as care of patients with psychiatric disorders, and lower acuity patients. Certifications covered in orientation are BLS, ACLS, and PALS.     General Summary

    Provides clinical support services to patient care staff by performing a variety of duties related to patient care. Takes patient vital signs, assists patients with activities of daily living (e.g., bathing, feeding, toileting, etc.), inventories and replenishes supplies and equipment, and performs special assigned and or delegated duties such as performing EKGs, Point-of-Care testing, phlebotomy and splinting.

     

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Essential Functions:

    + Provides general nursing care and personal care assistance to patients, including bathing, dressing, eating, changing bed linens, toileting and positioning.

    + Assists in the preparation and transportation of patients for tests, procedures, etc.

    + Monitors patient condition levels; reports changes to the Registered Nurse.

    + Documentation in ECare pain scale, input and output, removing foley catheters, vital signs and reports abnormal values to the RN. Collects specimens such as blood, urine or sputum using approved techniques and procedures. Obtains and documents temperature, blood pressure, weight, respiration, pulse and pulse oxygen. Monitors patient condition levels; reports changes to the appropriate individuals.

    + Sets up and removes equipment and supplies; ensures equipment is functioning properly and stored appropriately.

    + Performs EKGs and/or Point-of-Care testing which may include blood glucose, hemocult and specific gravity testing. Reports glucose to RN.

    + Under direction of registered nurse, inserts saline lock.

    + Under direction of registered nurse, perform prefab splint application.

    + Runs special errands as required. Responds to call lights.

    + Ensures patient rooms, nursing areas, supply carts, etc. are stocked with appropriate items at required levels.

    + Maintains par levels of supplies in the Emergency Department.

    + Applies splints and immobilization devices and outfits patients with crutches.

    + Maintains a visible presence in the Emergency Department between tasks.

    + Establishes a rapport with EMS providers, assists RN and EMS with initial patient contact and care upon arrival to ED bed and directs EMTs and Paramedics to RN for transfer of care reporting.

    + Caring is demonstrated through spiritual, physical, emotional, psychosocial and cultural responsiveness, and is integrated into the plan of care.

    + Annual recertification of BERT training.

    Common Expectations:

    + Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).

    + Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.

    + Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

    + Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings.

    + Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.

    + Attends meetings as required.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Education:

    + High School Diploma or GED Required

    Work Experience:

    + Less than 1 year Nursing Assistant, EMT or a Nursing Student Required

    Licenses:

    + Heartsaver First Aid CPR/AED Upon Hire Required

    + Certified Nurse Aide Upon Hire Preferred

    Courses and Training:

    + Behavior Response Training (3Day). Upon Hire Required
