ABOUT JOHN JAY COLLEGE
John Jay College of Criminal Justice is a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY) and an internationally recognized leader in educating for justice. Led by President Karol V. POSITION OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Associate Director for Transfer Advisement at John Jay College’s Academic Advisement Center, the CUNY Justice Academy (CJA) Transfer Academic Advisor will participate in the orientation, advisement, and registration of undergraduate students.
In addition to the general duties, this position will also be required to:
+ Advise CUNY Justice Academy students from partner campuses on academic requirements, selection of courses, and steps toward transfer readiness.
+ Serve as liaison on Justice Academy policies and procedures for students, faculty and staff for partner campuses.
+ Collaborate and oversee Justice Academy virtual events for community colleges campuses.
+ Act as John Jay College's administrative liaison to partner campuses as directed by John Jay's supervisor.
+ Stays abreast of changing institutional information to transmit to the team including but not limited to: admissions requirements, new programs, course changes, deadlines, important dates, costs, expanding facilities, updates in college-wide initiatives, transfer requirements, college and CUNY policies and procedures and state and federal mandates.
+ Participate in the development and implementation of group and individual advisement and registration sessions for CJA transfer students.
+ Track academic progress of assigned caseload, ensuring optimal support services to foster retention and degree completion.
+ Conduct student outreach as needed to contribute to positive enrollment and retention, important deadlines and upcoming events.
+ Collaborates with various departments at John Jay to ensure CJA transfer students receive timely and accurate feedback on accepted credits.
+ Engages in professional development opportunities through the Academic Advising Center, participates in relevant professional organizations, stays current with industry trends and literature, and enhances information technology skills to optimize work performance
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's degree in student personnel administration, higher education, counseling or related field preferred
- A minimum of (2) years of experience working directly with undergraduate students in an academic setting is strongly preferred (of the total required 4 years' experience)
- Direct advising experience with one or more of the following student populations preferred: transfer students, international students, disabled students, or students in academic difficulty.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills are required
- Ability to effectively interact with a diverse faculty, staff and student population while representing the Academic Advising Center and the College to internal and external constituents required.
- Familiarity with Student Development Theory and knowledge of CUNYFirst (PeopleSoft), EAB Navigate.
- Bilingual Spanish speaker preferred
CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW
Provides expert and/or specialized academic counseling a diverse student population.
- Offers comprehensive advisement to full-time and part-time students
- Works with other academic affairs staff as well as enrollment and student affairs to assist students to declare majors and select appropriate courses
- Monitors students' performances and takes appropriate action if necessary; resolves students' problems regarding curricular requirements
- Develops academic plans and performs graduation audits
- Provides information to students regarding student support services, college policies and program procedures and guidelines
- Facilitates workshops; assists with other department activities such as course scheduling
- Establishes and maintains student advisement files; prepares activity reports and analyses
- May supervise extramural activities, such as internships and community service; may assist with accreditation efforts as needed
- May provide career and transfer services and/or specialized program counseling
- May supervise junior advising and/or clerical staff
- Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
$62,411 - $72,667
Salary commensurate with education and experience.
CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 6.09% with additional increases of 3.25% effective 9/1/2025 and 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
