This posting is for a Transportation Worker III position in the Rowan County Maintenance Office located in Salisbury, NC. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices involved in road maintenance and construction activities, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, repairing pavements, assisting with pipe installation and other drainage tasks, taking inventory of materials, operating heavy equipment, and other assigned tasks. Duties of this position include shoveling, raking, asphalt repair, flagging traffic, ditching, and shrubbing. The position may be subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work. The employee will be expected to work during adverse weather or extreme circumstances.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

+ Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.

+ Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching.

+ Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew.

+ Experience in snow and ice removal operations.

+ Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper.

Additional Expectations:

The employee will be expected to work in emergency situations and inclement weather.

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.

Safety-toed shoes required.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements:
