TITLE: Director of Music and Liturgy
**DEPARTMENT:** Office of Campus Ministry
JOB SUMMARY:
The Director of Music and Liturgy oversees the liturgical and musical life of the Egan Chapel of St. Ignatius of Loyola and supports the wider mission of the Office of Campus Ministry. This includes coordinating all aspects of liturgical music, supervising liturgical ministers, and fostering a prayerful, inclusive, and justice-oriented worship experience rooted in the Catholic and Jesuit tradition. The Director will provide pastoral support to students, faculty, and staff and collaborate with colleagues to support spiritual formation programs, retreats, and special liturgical events.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
+ Master’s degree in Theology, Liturgical Studies, Pastoral Ministry, Music, or a related field required.
EXPERIENCE:
+ 1–5 years of experience in liturgical music and pastoral ministry, preferably in a Roman Catholic university, parish, or campus setting.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
+ Strong background in Roman Catholic liturgical music and liturgical practices.
+ Competency in choral direction, keyboard or guitar proficiency, and ensemble leadership.
+ Familiarity with the liturgical calendar and planning for various rites, seasons, and sacramental celebrations.
+ Ability to mentor and train student leaders and volunteers in a faith-based setting.
+ Effective organizational, communication, and pastoral skills.
WORK CONDITIONS:
+ Position requires availability on evenings and weekends in addition to a standard five-day work week.
+ Occasional travel may be required for retreats or immersion trips.
SUPERVISION:
+ **Reports to:** Director of Campus Ministry
+ **Supervises:** Student musicians and liturgical ministers, contract/stipend musicians, and music interns.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Music Leadership:
1. Coordinate and lead music for all Sunday, daily, and special liturgies in Egan Chapel.
2. Recruit, rehearse, and direct student choirs and instrumentalists.
3. Select theologically sound and accessible liturgical music suitable for the assembly.
4. Collaborate with the Director of the Glee Club and VPA department for key liturgies (e.g., Baccalaureate, Alumni/Parents Weekend).
5. Maintain a roster of contract musicians for special services and events.
6. Coordinate music and lead prayer for Campus Ministry retreats and events.
Liturgical Coordination:
1. Oversee all liturgical ministries (lectors, eucharistic ministers, sacristans, greeters, altar servers).
2. Schedule Jesuit and guest presiders for liturgies in Egan Chapel and St. Anthony of Padua Parish.
3. Coordinate and oversee training, scheduling, and formation of all student liturgical ministers.
4. Organize bi-weekly minister formation meetings and semesterly retreats.
5. Chair the Campus Ministry Prayer and Worship team and help develop seasonal liturgy plans.
6. Coordinate baptisms, weddings, and other sacramental services within the Chapel.
Pastoral and Campus Ministry Responsibilities:
1. Provide pastoral care, counseling, and spiritual direction for students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
2. Represent Campus Ministry at funerals, wakes, and other pastoral gatherings within the University community.
3. Collaborate with Campus Ministry colleagues to support spiritual programming, RCIA/Confirmation preparation, retreats, and service/immersion trips.
4. Participate in departmental meetings, planning, and initiatives to advance Campus Ministry’s mission.
5. Promote a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for worship and community-building.
Other Duties:
+ Set up and organize liturgical environments and prayer services.
+ Serve as adult leader on retreats and immersion experiences.
+ Perform other responsibilities as assigned in support of Campus Ministry goals and mission.
