    Job Summary

    The Research Technician III will play a key role in supporting the Estuarine Movement and Ecology Lab's field and laboratory projects focused on Gulf Sturgeon and other fish species research in the northern Gulf of Mexico region. This position will be heavily involved in the capture of target fish species, the collection of sediment and infaunal samples, the quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of collected data, and the analysis of telemetry data. The role also includes assisting with equipment construction, laboratory sample processing, comprehensive data curation and analysis, and contributing to report preparation. Fieldwork will necessitate multi-day trips with overnight stays, working in challenging Southeastern US weather conditions, and troubleshooting equipment in remote locations. This position requires close collaboration with other lab personnel, partners from USACE and USFWS, state agencies, and academic collaborators within and outside of USM.

     

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

     

    + Participate in the comprehensive data collection, rigorous quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), and sophisticated analysis of data from telemetered fish species.

    + Actively participate in diverse field sampling events, including the capture and tagging of large nekton, the collection of sediment and infaunal data, the acquisition of detailed habitat data, and the collection of small nekton using seines.

    + Assist in the construction and assembly of essential moorings and actively contribute to the ongoing maintenance and upkeep of critical field and laboratory equipment.

    + Collaborate closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) and other laboratory personnel in the preparation of comprehensive reports and other relevant project documentation.

    + Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the successful completion of the Estuarine Movement and Ecology Lab's research objectives.

    Minimum Qualifications

    An Associate's degree from an accredited college in fisheries science, ecology, marine biology, or a related field and two years of related experience or a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in fisheries science, ecology, marine biology, or a related field Must be comfortable working outdoors and at a microscope. Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.

     

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

     

    + Basic knowledge of aquatic ecology or fisheries science, including biological principles and common field/laboratory research techniques for collecting and processing biological and environmental data.

    + Awareness of safe laboratory and field practices.

    + Skilled in operating and maintaining field research equipment.

    + Demonstrated attention to detail and strong organizational skills for accurate data and sample management.

    + Problem-solving skills for equipment troubleshooting in the field.

    + Basic computer skills for data entry and management.

    + Effective communication and interpersonal skills for teamwork and collaboration.

    + Proficient in following established protocols and procedures.

    + Willingness and ability to participate in extended fieldwork, including multi-day trips and overnight stays, and to work in and around water/boats.

    + Adaptability and a quick learner capable of following instructions and mastering new techniques.

    + Ability to maintain accurate records.

    + Resourcefulness in adapting to changing conditions and troubleshooting equipment issues in remote locations.

    + Effective verbal and written communication skills.

    + Positive and collaborative attitude in a team setting.

    + Ability work during hot times of the year and in difficult (muddy bottom) field conditions

    + Ability to lift 50 lbs.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Experience with spatial data analysis, telemetry analysis, or community analyses in R.
