    Job Summary

    The Research Technician I will provide essential support to the Estuarine Movement and Ecology Lab for a term-limited project (anticipated end date: December 31, 2025, with potential for extension based on funding). This position will be focused on the movement ecology of large aquatic animals in the northern Gulf of Mexico region. This position will support all aspects of field and laboratory research, including fish capture and tagging, biological sample processing, hydroacoustic surveys, and telemetry equipment management. Fieldwork will involve multi-day trips in varying weather conditions and remote troubleshooting.

     

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

     

    + Participate in all aspects of fieldwork, including the capture of target fish species using various methods, safely handling and tagging fish with telemetry devices, accurately recording biological data, and conducting environmental sampling such as side scan sonar surveys and the collection of benthic sediment samples.

    + Perform the detailed sorting, enumeration, and preliminary identification of larval fish, fish eggs, and aquatic macroinvertebrates from collected plankton samples, potentially using microscopes and taxonomic keys.

    + Contribute to the entire lifecycle of the passive acoustic telemetry arrays, including the construction and preparation of equipment, deployment and retrieval of receivers, routine maintenance and servicing in the field, and troubleshooting technical issues.

    + Participate in the accurate curation and organization of collected field and laboratory data. Assist with preliminary data analysis and contribute to the preparation of progress reports, presentations, and other project-related documentation.

    + Assist with the construction, assembly, and repair of field and laboratory equipment. Maintain a clean and organized laboratory workspace and ensure adequate supplies are available.

    + Performs other duties as assigned to support the overall goals of the Estuarine Movement and Ecology Lab.

    Minimum Qualifications

    An Associate's degree in Marine Biology, Biology, or similar; or a high school diploma with one year of experience in a related field to the described work (e.g., Biology, Ecology, Wildlife and Fisheries). Must have some experience with field-based collections of fish and invertebrates. Must be comfortable working outdoors and at a microscope. Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.

     

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

     

    + Basic knowledge of aquatic ecology or fisheries science, including biological principles and common field/laboratory research techniques for collecting and processing biological and environmental data.

    + Awareness of safe laboratory and field practices.

    + Skilled in operating and maintaining field research equipment.

    + Demonstrated attention to detail and strong organizational skills for accurate data and sample management.

    + Problem-solving skills for equipment troubleshooting in the field.

    + Basic computer skills for data entry and management.

    + Effective communication and interpersonal skills for teamwork and collaboration.

    + Proficient in following established protocols and procedures.

    + Willingness and ability to participate in extended fieldwork, including multi-day trips and overnight stays, and to work in and around water/boats.

    + Adaptability and a quick learner capable of following instructions and mastering new techniques.

    + Ability to maintain accurate records.

    + Resourcefulness in adapting to changing conditions and troubleshooting equipment issues in remote locations.

    + Effective verbal and written communication skills.

    + Positive and collaborative attitude in a team setting.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Experience conducting field research that targets a variety of fishes and experience with deployment of drift/plankton nets. Experience sorting fish and invertebrates from samples.
