    The Position

    The Portland Police Bureau is hiring for two (2) Digital Forensics Examiners to join the team.

     

    Job Appointment: Full-Time, Regular.

     

    Work Schedule: 4x10-hour workdays (Monday-Thursday or Tuesday-Friday).

     

    Work Location(s): Central Precinct, 1111 S.W. 2nd Ave., Portland, Oregon 97204; Northwest Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory, 1201 NE Lloyd Blvd, Portland, OR 97232

    Position Summary:

    The job of a Digital Forensic Examiner is to assist law enforcement officials with enforcing criminal laws through forensic collection, recovery, processing, preservation, analysis, storage, maintenance, and/or presentation of digital evidence. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of creativity, independent judgment, and initiative in order to accomplish criminal investigative objectives dependent on software and hardware expertise. The principal duties of this class are performed in a forensics laboratory or in conjunction with police officers in the execution of search warrants in the field.

     

    Note: This position requires the incumbent to travel to various field locations to collect evidence and provide on-site analysis. A valid driver’s license is required for this role.

     

    Disclaimer: As a Digital Forensics Examiner, you will be required to review and analyze electronic evidence, which may include explicit, graphic, or otherwise sensitive material. This aspect of the job is integral to the investigation process and requires a professional and detached approach. Proper support and resources will be provided to help manage the emotional and psychological impact of these responsibilities.

    As a Digital Forensics Examiner, you will:

    + Extract, analyze, and interpret digital evidence stored on electronic devices.

    + Assist investigators with the proper seizure of computers, cellular devices, storage medium, peripherals, and/or other items functionally reliant upon computer components.

    + Support investigators in digital forensics analysis and provides testimony at trial.

    + Collect, preserve, label, catalog, and store evidentiary items for presentation in criminal proceedings in accordance with legal standards and best practices.

    + Compile relevant digital case evidence into a variety of reports.

    + Serve as subject matter expert on technical matters relating to digital evidence.

    + Make determinations and recommendations regarding appropriate items to be seized based on search warrant particulars and relevant case law.

    Applicants must specifically address in their cover letter and resume how their education, training and/or experience, demonstrates each of the following minimum qualifications:

    + Thorough knowledge and understanding of computer and/or mobile device operating systems, including file structures and file headers.

    + Knowledge of electronic data storage and security systems found in common computers and mobile devices.

    + Experience writing technical documentation and communicating complex analytical topics to non-technical audiences.

    + Ability to analyze and evaluate complex situations to provide sound, logical, fact-based conclusions and recommendations.

    Applicant must also possess:

    + Ability to pass an in-depth background investigation.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Although not required, you may have one or more of the following:

    + Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in computer science, data process, or related field.

    + Two (2) years of experience in law enforcement, digital forensics, crime analysis, or a related field.

    + Knowledge of principles, practices, methods of and techniques of digital forensics, current developments, trends, and technologies within the digital forensics field.

    + Knowledge of computer forensics software.

    + Experience extracting, analyzing, and interpreting digital evidence from mobile devices, computers, or IOT devices.

    + Certification or completion of any of the following courses/programs: IACIS Certified Forensic Computer Examiner, SANS GIAC Certified Forensic Examiner, SANS GIAC Advanced Smartphone Forensics, Cellebrite Certified Mobile Examiner.
