The Innovation Engineer ll – NTC is responsible for driving the advancement of Nomad’s technologies and systems through the application of research, development, software, and engineering expertise. This role requires a combination of creativity, technical proficiency, and hands-on problem-solving to design, implement, and improve products, processes, and technologies that strengthen NTC as a differentiator. This position requires some travel.
Responsibilities include new system innovation, advanced sensor integration, system automation, reliability testing, and exploration of emerging technologies to support next-generation mobile command solutions.
Primary Responsibilities: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following areas of innovation, research and development, reliability, and integration:
• Innovation and New Product Development: Research industry standards, design and develop new product offerings, and create improved products, processes, or operational policies based on customer feedback. Participate in scoping, scheduling, and coordination of technical aspects of new product development efforts.
• System Automation and Remote Control: Develop programmable system responses, implement remote deployment capabilities, and create automated startup and shutdown processes
• Advanced Sensor Integration: Integrate sensors for safety, performance monitoring, and diagnostics, including mast, slideout, leveling, hydraulic systems, fuel systems, and sensor health reporting.
• Communications and Network Enhancements: Improve wireless communication reliability, integrate radio mesh networking solutions, and enable secure remote access and satellite communication capabilities.
• User Interface and Process Improvements: Streamline startup, shutdown, and deployment procedures using automation, biometric authentication, augmented reality (AR) guidance, and the elimination of manual processes.
• Chassis and Equipment Data Integration: Connect and utilize vehicle and equipment data systems, including Ford UIS and J1939 standards, for enhanced system monitoring and control.
• Security and Access Innovations: Implement secure authentication technologies, lockdown capabilities, and badge tracking systems to enhance platform security.
• Reliability Testing and Production Support: Conduct system testing, including performance and load testing, and support field updates and production reliability initiatives. Draft and maintain comprehensive startup and shutdown procedures.
• Emerging Technology Research: Explore applications of robotics, computer vision, LIDAR, SLAM, machine learning, and augmented reality to drive future system capabilities.
• Reliability Improvement and Testing Lifecycle: Identify opportunities to improve system reliability through design, hardware, software, and process enhancements. Plan, execute, and support testing activities across multiple stages, including component testing, subsystem testing, system integration testing, and environmental/stress testing, with a focus on diagnosing failures, proposing corrective actions, and validating improvements.
Secondary Responsibilities:
Plan & Analyze:
• Review and evaluate product proposals from both internal and external customers to determine feasibility, producibility, cost, delivery time, and production time.
• Discuss proposals with customer representatives, engineers, NTC team members, and other personnel.
• Formulate straightforward conceptual designs based on proposals to meet customer requirements.
Hardware Configuration. Own the NTC hardware configuration process, including:
• Embedded software for micro-controlled hardware (Modules) and sensors;
• Software for Control Systems (Central Node), tablets, and screens;
• Software and system architecture for Content Delivery and Distribution systems, including but not limited to Encoders and CDNs;
• Software/communication libraries and protocols for communication between Modules, Central Nodes, Sensors, and third-party control systems.
• Assemble and modify existing equipment and software to meet special needs.
Test:
• Test configured hardware on NTC test boards and/or environmental testing platforms.
• Verify software performance against specifications and requirements; analyze and record test data.
Document:
• Create, prepare, and write systematic documentation needed to support, reproduce, and troubleshoot issues with each respective product.
• Build and maintain asset configuration and SD card automation files.
Train:
• Provide internal training to the Nomad Production team regarding NTC hardware installation and testing.
Support:
• Provide technical troubleshooting support remotely or onsite as needed.
• Assist with diagnosing field issues, recommending solutions, and ensuring corrective actions are documented and implemented.
Participation:
• Attend meetings regarding upcoming builds, take meaningful notes, and actively participate:
• Proposal Reviews;
• Sales/Project Management Kickoffs;
• SPN reviews, Initial Design Reviews (IDR), and Executive Design Reviews (EDR); and
• Actively participate in Executive Reviews and document any findings.
Identify & Order Hardware:
• Submit Bills of Materials (BOMs) based on the project requirements in a timely fashion and track status.
Accountabilities:
• Satisfy the above responsibilities on a quarterly basis.
• Provide constructive feedback and contribute to the success of Innovation Engineers at level I; escalation of insurmountable roadblocks.
• Complete system design hardware for future iterations of the NTC platform and related products.
• Work with software engineers to log all NTC hardware activities and create the necessary logic flows to control NTC features and functions.
• Complete in a timely manner tasks pursuant to agreed-to Sprint requirements in a high-quality manner.
• Actively participate in NTC meetings and demonstrate effective communication.
• Arrive and depart from work within standard office hours and be responsive outside of such hours as needed.
• Due to the nature of responsibilities, Innovation Engineers may have limited opportunities to work from home and are expected to use good judgment when evaluating their ability to do so, in conformance with NTC policies.
Required Education / Experience:
Education / Experience:
• MS in Engineering and 1+ years’ experience in electrical engineering or similar
or
• BS in Engineering or related field and 2+ years’ experience in electrical engineering or similar
or
• High school degree and 7+ years’ experience in electrical engineering or similar
Employment Experience:
• 1+ years’ experience with microcontrollers and electrical or mechanical engineering
• Development of at least one hardware application
• Understanding of microcontroller programming
• Basic understanding of electrical drafting, technical writing, and technological designs
• General understanding of web application function, Linux, and Windows OS
• Working knowledge of NodeJS, JavaScript, React, and/or similar programming
• Working knowledge of relational database systems and Object Orientated Programming

Physical Demands:
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to use hands and arms to finger, handle, feel, reach, or operate objects, tools, or controls.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job including close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to distinguish individual colors.
Working Environment:
• The work environment is a partially environmentally controlled indoor environment. Depending upon the time of year, temperatures can fluctuate between 60F and 100F but is typically around 70F. There are times when working outside will be required.
• The employee may be subjected to noise levels, ranging from low volume to loud and will be required to wear provided safety hearing devices from time to time, which will be provided.
• All Team Members must wear provided OSHA approved eye protection at all times in manufacturing areas. The employee will be required to wear provided safety eyewear throughout the performance of their duties.
