The Role

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

This position will support engineering efforts in a manufacturing shop environment. The primary assignment for this position is resolving engineering related issues across all NNS Programs in a manufacturing shop/facility. This position will interface with Engineering, Planning, Production Control, and Trades personnel, Facilities, Safety, Quality and Management as needed. Daily responsibilities include providing engineering support addressing/answering Inspection Reports, Engineering Reports, Trouble Records, or Vendor Information Requests. Other responsibilities include identifying and supporting equipment/machinery issues to improve overall equipment reliability to maximize shop throughput.

Other responsibilities may include: Designs manufacturing processes, procedures and production layouts for assemblies, equipment installation, processing, machining and material handling. Designs arrangement of machines within plant facilities to ensure most efficient and productive layout. Designs sequence of operations and specifies procedures for the fabrication of tools and equipment and other functions that affect product performance. Adapts machine or equipment design to factory and production conditions. May incorporate inspection and test requirements into the production plan. Inspects performance of machinery, equipment, and tools to verify their efficiency, and investigates and initiates corrective action of problems and deficiencies to ensure product quality. Develops manufacturing processes that are applicable to statistical process control, and may develop those techniques. Provides guidance to engineering regarding design concepts and specification requirements to best utilize equipment and manufacturing techniques. Ensures processes and procedures are in compliance with regulations.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;

Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;

Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

Ability to obtain a Clearance is required.
