Job Summary
Bowdoin College seeks a dynamic and experienced leader to serve as Director for Safety and Security. This key leadership role provides strategic direction and operational oversight in alignment with the department’s mission, values, and commitment to excellence, while fostering a safe and welcoming environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Key responsibilities include:
+ Leadership and Strategy – Collaborate with the Associate Vice President for Safety and Security to establish departmental goals and strategic direction, including developing and implementing safety and security policies, procedures, and practices that reflect industry best standards
+ Program Development and Evaluation – Design and maintain a quality assurance plan aligned with departmental objectives, and regularly assess performance metrics to ensure goals are met or exceeded
+ Team Management – Oversee staffing, supervision, performance evaluations, and professional development of the department, and ensure equitable and consistent administration of College policies in hiring, supervision, and termination processes
+ Budget Oversight – Prepare and manage the departmental budget, including monitoring expenditures, implementing cost-control measures, and reviewing and authorizing departmental purchases
+ Collaboration and Community Engagement – Serve as the College’s liaison with local, state, and federal agencies, as well as peer institutions throughout Maine and New England. Foster collaboration, share best practices, and coordinate training opportunities.
+ Operational Oversight – Ensure staffing and planning for special events and emergency situations, as well as prepare and approve security incident reports and conduct or coordinate investigations as needed. Maintain compliance and serve as the College’s Clery Act Compliance Officer
Compensation, Benefits, and Perks:
+ The hiring range for this position is expected to be $93,000 – $110,000

Education/Skills Requirements
+ Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration or related field
+ Advanced training from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy or equivalent highly preferred
+ Must hold current CPR /First Aid certification or be willing to obtain upon hire
+ Ability to assess campus safety and security operations holistically and develop a strategic vision that fosters a highly responsive, community-focused department recognized for its commitment to the safety and well-being of the entire College community
+ Ability to develop effective and sustained relationships with students, faculty, and staff
+ Exceptional interpersonal skills and leadership ability to establish rapport with and foster cooperative and respectful environment for students, faculty, staff, alumni, dignitaries, visitors, and other constituencies
+ Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to conduct investigations, share information, seek input, adapt messaging for varied audiences, and handle confidential information with discretion
+ Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously
+ Ability to remain calm under pressure, paired with a strong work ethic, high motivation, creativity, and proven leadership skills
+ Skilled in conflict resolution and negotiation, with a collaborative approach that values multiple perspectives
+ Working knowledge of safety and security technology systems, maintenance, and reporting
+ A valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the requirements of the College’s Motor Vehicle Use Policy
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
+ At least 10 years of advancing experience—with demonstrated leadership—in security, public safety, emergency management, or related field
+ Prior experience in higher education or a similarly complex academic environment highly preferred

Standard Work Days and Hours
+ This is a full-time, year-round (1.0 FTE ) exempt position, working 40 hours per week, primarily Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
+ Occasional evening and weekend hours are required in response to incidents.
+ The position includes 24/7 on-call responsibilities, except during scheduled vacations, and requires a time commitment necessary to fulfill the role’s essential duties.
+ The anticipated start date will be on or after July 1, 2025
