    Description

    The hiring pay range for Director of Engineering and Capital Projects: $104,114 - $132,746 annual salary.

    SUMMARY

    The Director of Engineering and Capital Projects provides leadership and oversight to the Engineering Division and leads the successful planning and implementation of approved capital projects. Engineering Division is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of all facilities and building systems for San Diego Theatres’ venues, the City of San Diego Administration and Operations buildings, and the San Diego Concourse. This position oversees and supports daily and event operations. The Director exercises significant independent judgement and initiative in directing the department’s functions and requires strategic leadership, technical expertise and project management prowess.

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

     

    + Hire, train, and evaluate Engineering personnel. Develop and coach direct reports to ensure the optimal performance and alignment with San Diego Theatres’ service standards.

    + Provide direction, oversight, planning and execution of the installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, electrical infrastructure equipment and general maintenance of the facility.

    + Responsible for the operation of the building automation systems.

    + Act as Project Manager for repair, maintenance, capital improvements and/or replacements and other projects. Create and maintain detailed records, reports and documentation of projects.

    + Collaborate with relevant entities, stakeholders and third-party consultants/vendors in the planning and execution of capital projects.

    + Provide design, engineering, and construction support during disaster recovery and emergency operations.

    + Ensure compliance with facility and Engineering safety policies and practices by engineering staff and outside vendors and contractors.

    + Update and track the Engineering Division’s Standard Operating Procedures and oversee the digital records and storage.

    + Coordinate with the other San Diego Theatres divisions and City of San Diego staff in scheduling of engineering related maintenance of the facility and the provision of utility and support services for licensees of San Diego Theatres venues.

    + Responsible for the preparation and management of the Division’s budget forecasts, proposed budgets (30-month outlook) and 10-year view of planned Capital Projects. Works within the approved budgets to maximize the effectiveness of the operation of the HVAC and MEP systems across San Diego Theatres’ venues.

    + Oversee testing and permitting of all fire safety systems and equipment particular to the Engineering Division.

    + Promptly advise the President & CEO of issues, incidents or vulnerabilities that may impact the safety, success or efficiency of San Diego Theatres, employees, clients, users, or the public.

    + Adhere to Collective Bargaining Agreements with Operating Engineers Local 801 and Industrial Carpenters Local 721 when determining division work plans and managing represented staff .

    + Participate as a member of the negotiating team for the International Union of Operating Engineers and Cabinet Makers, and Industrial Carpenters Local 721 contracts, as needed.

    + Continuously develop personal understanding of SDT Mission, Vision and Values Statements, and effectively communicate their practice and application to the Operations and Engineering teams.

    REQUIREMENTS

    + Strong leadership skills that facilitate quality decision-making and prioritizing staff to drive results.

    + Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to diplomatically and tactfully resolve difficult and sensitive situations.

    + Demonstrates business acumen and the ability to advance change throughout the organization that is significantly impactful to the business.

    + Possess exceptional ethics, honesty, and integrity as well as complete respect for confidentiality and the appropriateness of communication.

    + Advanced proficiency in the Microsoft Suite of tools. Office365, Microsoft Teams and SharePoint skills a plus.

    + Ability and expectation to work irregular hours, nights, weekends, holidays, and long hours as necessary.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    + Supervises the Chief Engineer and 10 employees in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

    + Maintain a positive attitude and an open mind. Strive to create an atmosphere of cooperation, engagement, and respect.

     

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

     

    + Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from a four-year college or university preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    + Five years related experience including supervisory experience in safe operation of facility management, preferably in the performing arts, hospitality or other 24/7 service venue operation, and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    + Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and codes pertaining to facilities and personnel management.

    + Experience in preparing and monitoring a budget including personnel forecasting, revenue projecting and capital improvements.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

    + Building Automation Systems experience, a plus.

    + BOMA Certification, a plus.

    + Stationary Engineer certification and/or experience, a plus.

    + Refrigerant certifications, a plus.

    + BOC II other professional certifications, a plus.

    + CFMP, a plus

    OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    + Knowledge of CMMS facility management and maintenance software, a plus

    + Thermography Experience a plus.

    + Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
