    Position Summary

    Position is responsible for working with and providing legal support services for the staff attorney to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Position is responsible for managing and facilitating the progress and results of projects under the direction of management, including substantive research to further those projects.

    Position Responsibilities

    Reviews and prioritizes a large volume of public records requests, non-party requests for production of documents and subpoena duces tecums.

     

    Maintains a database with what requests are coming in and when the responses are due.

     

    Corresponds directly with attorneys, citizens and coordinate with IMPD employees both civilian and officers.

     

    Responsible for redaction of sensitive data prior to release of records.

     

    Interacts with the media regarding pending record requests.

     

    Assists in reviewing discovery and preparing responses.

     

    Assists in drafting and reviewing contracts and MOUs.

     

    Conducts legal research relating to laws governing access to public records.

     

    Researches best practice models regarding law enforcement records.

     

    Creates files and drafts pleadings.

     

    Responsible for retrieving pleadings from court files and filing pleadings in court.

     

    Attends scheduled administrative hearings.

     

    Assists in all disciplinary matters before the Civilian Police Merit Board.

     

    Investigate any complaint alleging non-compliance with, or conduct prohibited by ADA and/or US DOJ Settlement Agreement #204-265-194.

     

    Develop and provide training to IMPD personnel on ADA issues.

     

    Compile and maintain information related to citizen complaints related to ADA and accessibility issues.

     

    Develop and maintain an inventory of ADA resources to maintain compliance.

     

    Serve as liaison to federal, state and county government agencies relating to ADA compliance.

    Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in a field of study related to the position and two (2) years of related work experience. Knowledge of legal terms is required. Effective analytical, communication, organization and computer skills are preferred.

     

    Independent Judgment

     

    Independent judgment is regularly utilized when there are no available policies and procedures and errors in judgment may cause inconsistencies and inconvenience as well as regularly problems.
