Aquaculture Internship

In partnership with the Hamlet of Setauket, Cornell Cooperative Extension is proud to continue with our shellfish grow-out program where oyster will be raised to enhance water quality and the natural oyster population. As an added educational component, high school and/or college students have the opportunity to partake in a paid internship. The program will allow students to learn about shellfish aquaculture techniques including grow-out procedures, measuring and growth and survival rates, and monitoring environmental parameters such as water temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen. The paid internship will be offered from July 1st through August 29th. The positions are part-time 12-20 hours per week. Depending on timing, this orientation may be virtual or held at the Riverhead office.
Major Duties of Position:
1. Work with Cornell Shellfish Biologist and Aquaculture Assistant in Setauket, NY.
2. Assist with maintenance and upkeep of the shellfish grow-out system (FLUPSY).
3. Assist with the collection of scientific monitoring data for shellfish and water quality.
4. Assist educator with providing general information for the public.
Required Qualifications:
+ Hamlet of Setauket resident currently enrolled in High School or College.
+ Ability to follow instructions carefully.
+ Ability to work alone or with some supervision.
+ Ability to interact effectively with the public.
+ Ability to work outdoors under potentially adverse field conditions and perform physical tasks as needed.
+ Knowledge of natural science, plant science or marine science.
+ Must be able to lift 40 lbs. and handle heavy gear.
+ Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Enrolled in a science or marine science program with a local High School.
+ Familiarity with, or experience in, scientific sampling and marine or environmental science.
+ Having a driver’s license and a vehicle.
POSITION DETAILS:
Salary: $16.50 per hour
Schedule: NONEXEMPT – TEMP: July 1, 2025 – August 29, 2025
No relocation or VISA Sponsorship available
